If you are afraid your grips will slip off the end of your fingers, you can try wrapping a rubber band between the finger holes and around the wristband to keep them on. The dowel should be under your fingers when you grip the bar... that's what it's for. With newer grips they might be kinda short but they stretch out a little over time.
