There is usually a one week camp at our gym as well as a one week trip to a camp in SC.

this will be the first year dd does the SC camp. She was not on the team last year.

gym law mom will become famous soon enough
My gymie is going to Lake Owen(Woodward) in June. A bunch of girls from the team are going along with several parents and one of our optional coaches who works there a few weeks every summer. He will not "be on salary" the week they go, so he said he will have alot of time to spend with them and also make sure they get the help they need from the coaches there. The camp is being very generous since our kids have to fly and then rent a couple of vans to get there. They said they will house the girls on Sat. night and feed them for free on Sunday before check in.

My gymie is soooooo excited about going. This will be her 1st time at an away gym camp and away from home without mom/dad.

Hi Bogwoppit.... what do you mean Woodward is "free flow"? That might not be a good thing!!! I thought it was very structured by looking at their "typical day" schedules!

Our coach went to woodward last year with her DD's 9 & 11 (going on 14 though), this was Woodward in PA. They run a BMX, extreme sport programme side by side with their gymnastics programme, therefore there are boys and girls of all ages there. Gym was only really the morning session, in the afternoons kids could do all sorts of things.

The coach felt that there was not a lot of supervision of the younger girls, and that they were all over the place with a lot of older kids hanging around aimlessly. She is not going back this year as she felt that there was not enough structure. This coach is not known as uptight or controlling, so we'll wait a while for this more grown up experience for our girls.

She did say however, the food was great , cabins very nice and the training facilities were great. Coaching level was high and the extra activities were fun, though lots of things were extras that had to be paid for. The camp our girls go to it is all inclusive and all the girls get to choose from any of the activities. Woodward PA is not the experience that I think my girls are ready for yet. Perhaps my girls are a little sheltered, we do live in the country and my kids are kids.

I think talking to other parents whose kids have been there will help you make a choice. For me it was easy, and we do have a great alternative.

My dd was supposed to go to woodward last year - and I had heard the same thing and decided not to send her. When her friends got back they said that it really wasn't that structured and there was a lot of free time. She wants to go somewhere this year - after reading a few posts here I think I want to look into the flip fest camp. That one looks pretty cool. It is far (about 5 1/2 hours) - but do-able. For those who have done that one - is it well run and structured (not overly, but my dd is still only 10 and has never been to an away camp before)

www.gymrep.com check it out, it's very cool and we love the outdoor aspect of the programme, also great French immersion. There were girls from the US, Mexico and France there last year. Coaches come from all over Canada and France. Activity supervisors come from Canada, UK and even Australia.

Also it is a great deal pricewise.

That is so cool! I would love the French immersion; I pick up French quickly, even skipped a full year in school, and my friend and I speak exclusively in French to each other.

We have done a couple different Camps. Karolyi's in Texas and Lake Owen in Wisconsin, Three years ago we went to Karolyi's Camp . It was fun, but the girls really missed the traditional camp experience of northern Wisconsin.

We have been happy with Lake Owen, two 3 hour sessions of gymnastics each day and a third optional practice. If they choose not to partkake in the optional session there is boating, swimming all the fun camp stuff.

We have a coach that grew up going to Lake Owen and goes with the team every year. The girls have a blast.

not to mention it is close to home!
