Our family has come to a gymnastics crossroads - to leave our gym or to stay.

DD has been at this gym since the beginning (except for one rec year when she was 4). It is a big gym, well known, great coaching, and a real together type atmosphere. We both love it there. But..... it doesn't train elite athletes, or want high performance kids. National, sure. College scholarship, sure. That isn't a focus, but if it happens great. But if you want more, it really doesn't work with their overall goals, and I can appreciate that.

But DD thinks she might want more. She's willing to work as hard as she needs to, and has some significant goals. She thinks in the two year or so horizon, and I have to say, when I was eight, I couldn't think much beyond that either. She's a good little gymnast (competed level 7 this year and training L8 and starting some L9 beam). But her coaches don't really push her.... I keep hearing "don't worry, she's only 8. There's plenty of time. ".

We went to open tryouts at another gym, where they have a history of training elite athletes, and not just a couple. They have a great HC. I'm not too familiar with the other coaches, but she'd be training with HC and someone else. They offered her a spot on the spot. We chatted about what she can do, and I mentioned the "don't worry, she's only 8". They said, "hey, she's already eight. If she wants to go far, we have work to do and should start now."

She would likely be fine for the next year or two in her current gym. But DH and I are thinking perhaps we should switch her now, and potentially she could be that much further along, given a jointly agreed on focus, and surely not behind even if she chose a less strict/intense path in the future. But she's only eight, loves her friends and her next year's coach. She acknowledges she'll eventually have to switch, and thinks the new gym would be the place....eventually. She's torn too.

Sorry for dragging on. As I write, the answer seems straight forward, and yet I'm still torn. After all, she's only 8....

My kids gym is going to start new hours for the girls I think starting June 1. The level that Alex is in now will increase in hours. Currently she has been doing 12 hours and it will jump to 18! I am happy and worried at the same time.
Most of the kids in her level have also been in the "hot shots" program going an extra day and have been doing 15 hours so the jump won't be quite as big for them. Plus, Alex is 13 and is starting to realize that there is a world outside the gym. I have always told her that she doesn't have to give up her social life completely for gym. (that was easy when she was only going 12 hours!!)

Has anyone else had that big of a jump in hours and how did it work for your gymmie?

Honestly, I think she has progressed just as well as any of the girls at the gym even though she is there less.

This may not be the right place to ask this, but I don't have access to other forums. DD just turned 6. Her gym had team tryouts for level 1 (new level 1), and she made the team. She is very excited and is having a lot of fun at the practices.

To make a very long story short, I had been going back and forth about the gym she is at. It's a smaller gym, but their philosophy is to start a group of young girls (5-6 yr olds) on the team at one time at level 1 (used to be level 2), and they can work their way up from there. I had thought about switching gyms earlier this year because DD was really ready to get out of the preschool group and was doing some great tumbling. I decided to stay put because the other gym we looked at was super serious. We want her having fun and not burning out. The coaches at our gym are great with young kids and very nurturing.

Meanwhile, she has done some fun holiday camps with school friends at a competitive cheerleading gym this spring (I know the tumbling is different. Probably not great idea etc.). The cheer place is talking up having her participate on their minis team.

DD is dying to do both gymnastics team and cheerleading. I told her to choose which one she likes better and she says she is doing both. At 6, should I let her try both out? Level 1 gymnastics practices 6 hours a week (yikes!) and cheer is one hour during week and one hour on Sunday. As I am typing this, that seems really extreme. Of course gymnastics says she will "fall behind" if she takes off a year, and the cheer people say the same. It seems like just about every sport gets really intense at younger and younger ages!

Hi all!

Question regarding coaching style and effectiveness:

DD has just had a change in coach at her gym (we were given no notice- email the day of the switch), and given a coach brand new to the gym. I wasn't there to watch the first class with new coach but was there today. Moms who were there her first day said today was the same. The girls are all hotshots moving to preteam in July. Their previous coach had them working various skills and all 4 apparatus each class(2x/wk for 1.5 hrs) and corrected them throughout. While old coach worked with girls individually, there would always be a circuit of stations for the waiting girls to work on other skills.. Ie handstands or bridge etc... New coach says she's focusing on correcting form and bad habits right now, but in 1.5 hrs today only worked on handstands and arabesque, and then had them climb the rope for the last 30 min. My dd wasn't using her feet at all, but had the rope between her bent legs, feet not touching the rope, and was only using her arms. She climbed the rope 3 times this way and wasn't corrected- it took her a while to get all the way to the top and new coach was too busy filling out "good job" certificates to notice. While 2 girls climbed, the rest goofed off and rolled around on the floor. This grp ranges in age from 5-7, my dd being a little younger turning 5 at the end of June. I am friendly with the people at the front desk and asked about the new class structure, and they had new coach come speak with me and other concerned moms at the end of class to introduce herself and discuss new class structure. She claims she is correcting bad habits, which is tedious- hence the 30 min in handstand position both on the floor and in actual handstand, so the goofing off was their earned playtime for paying attention during the correction time. She says the certificates she spent so much time filling out instead of correcting our girls, are to give them goals and reward them for reaching them, and later will set harder goals and based on all of these certificates they have received, they will believe they can achieve the harder goals. She thinks they need goof off time so they will have fun during practice. And they spent so much time on the rope because she wants to build their strength first and then when she starts working on skills with them, they'll get it more easily. This style is so opposite to old coach, let alone any coaching I've ever seen, I want to ask if this is a known way to run a hotshots group, or any group for that matter. Btw we were not given any info on who this new coach is or her background, and I don't think if I hadn't said something today there would have ever been a conversation about our kids and the changes and progression in their classes. Thoughts?

Thanks for reading! :)

At our annual extravaganza, we have a recital for the rec girls, an in house meet for our developmental teams, and an exhibition by our team girls. We make a big deal of it with ordering special leos for each group, real medals and trophies, and a big choreographed dance number for the team in addition to displaying some of the routines.

We have a mom who makes no secret of her lack of respect for our sport and is quite open about using gymnastics only as an enhancement for her daughter's dance career. So I guess I should not have been surprised when her daughter takes the floor in her new gymnastics leotard, fancy hair, stage make up, and..... wait for it............... the matching scrunchie placed about two inches above her right knee.

I really try to be a nice person. Seriously I do. And I have no bad feelings toward this poor child at all. But I still must confess that I lost it. I seriously lost it. As in had to hide behind my program so as not to embarrass myself and owe this poor woman an apology at a later date.

She'll be training new level 3 (I think)....although, if I understand correctly, they want to wait to decide what she'll be competing until later. She's picked up so much so quickly that they want to see what she can do with more practice hours a week.

I'm excited and nervous, but mostly excited as we enter into the world of competitive gymnastics. I'm sure I'm going to have a 1000 questions. Don't worry, I'll use the search option on CB before asking them all. :p

I do find myself wondering, however, how much money I can make selling plasma.
