Hi all!

Question regarding coaching style and effectiveness:

DD has just had a change in coach at her gym (we were given no notice- email the day of the switch), and given a coach brand new to the gym. I wasn't there to watch the first class with new coach but was there today. Moms who were there her first day said today was the same. The girls are all hotshots moving to preteam in July. Their previous coach had them working various skills and all 4 apparatus each class(2x/wk for 1.5 hrs) and corrected them throughout. While old coach worked with girls individually, there would always be a circuit of stations for the waiting girls to work on other skills.. Ie handstands or bridge etc... New coach says she's focusing on correcting form and bad habits right now, but in 1.5 hrs today only worked on handstands and arabesque, and then had them climb the rope for the last 30 min. My dd wasn't using her feet at all, but had the rope between her bent legs, feet not touching the rope, and was only using her arms. She climbed the rope 3 times this way and wasn't corrected- it took her a while to get all the way to the top and new coach was too busy filling out "good job" certificates to notice. While 2 girls climbed, the rest goofed off and rolled around on the floor. This grp ranges in age from 5-7, my dd being a little younger turning 5 at the end of June. I am friendly with the people at the front desk and asked about the new class structure, and they had new coach come speak with me and other concerned moms at the end of class to introduce herself and discuss new class structure. She claims she is correcting bad habits, which is tedious- hence the 30 min in handstand position both on the floor and in actual handstand, so the goofing off was their earned playtime for paying attention during the correction time. She says the certificates she spent so much time filling out instead of correcting our girls, are to give them goals and reward them for reaching them, and later will set harder goals and based on all of these certificates they have received, they will believe they can achieve the harder goals. She thinks they need goof off time so they will have fun during practice. And they spent so much time on the rope because she wants to build their strength first and then when she starts working on skills with them, they'll get it more easily. This style is so opposite to old coach, let alone any coaching I've ever seen, I want to ask if this is a known way to run a hotshots group, or any group for that matter. Btw we were not given any info on who this new coach is or her background, and I don't think if I hadn't said something today there would have ever been a conversation about our kids and the changes and progression in their classes. Thoughts?

Thanks for reading! :)

Hey, all! I'm so happy I finally have a question I can post here (yeah, I know, I'm a little weird). Anyway, I am working with a small group of old level 4's training (old) level 5 skills. They're all very tight, talented, determined girls, but they're small and have tiny hands. We started working tap swings a couple weeks ago and I've had several of them peel off (one of my littlest ones tried her taps 3 times in a row last night and peeled every stinking time!).

Right now, because of this, I'm giving them a lot of heavy spot during the "back" portion of the tap swing so I can easily catch them when and if they peel, but it's so consistent I was wondering if there was something I or they could do to remedy the situation. They use proper form (toes in front, not behind), they wear grips (non-dowel), and I make sure they use chalk, but I was wondering if there were any drills or conditioning I should have them doing to improve grips strength (NOTE: We do not have a rope), or if the peeling was something they will just grow out of as they improve? Any ideas are welcome!

Finally, random but somewhat related question, do any of you fellow coaches think it would be helpful for them to start using water and chalk on their grips? Right now I just have them using chalk (gym owner isn't a big fan of little girls using the spray bottle), but I've noticed they've rubbed most of the chalk off the high bar during practices and it seems pretty slick.

Thanks in advance! You guys are the best!

I will be starting to coach the new level 3 team this summer at my gym and continuing into the season. I have experience coaching rec classes and helping out with the Mason Dixon team. I am wondering if anyone can offer any tips on how you expose your newly competitive gymnasts (that have never competed before) to the concept of competitive gymnastics, and the difference between rec gym (when usually the gymnasts are there to talk to their friends and swing like monkeys on the bars) and team (where it is more serious and they are there because they actually like gymnastics or their parents forced them to be there). I really want to make a good first impression the first day I meet these girls, as every coach hopefully does, but I also want them to be clear that they are on a team instead of just in a rec class.. I am trying to prepare everything I can before the summer practices start (like drills and progressions, skill charts perhaps, etc.) and I would like to plan for this aspect of gymnastics, too. Maybe a binder with weekly goals would help with this? What do you all think or have experienced success with? Thank you all in advance!

So I have this one rec class for advanced beginners 9 and up. The focus is supposed to be on L2 skills but its very small and informal and I have mostly more advanced (skills at level 3 or so) kids who are in there because it works better for their schedules or whatever. It's my absolute favorite class because I get to teach everything from front limbers to front tucks. there are usually only 3-4 kids so it's very tailored to their needs. The only issue I have is spotting. I only have one kid that's smaller than I am, and it's normally not an issue until we get to bars. I have a few kids who've got about 3 inches and 15 lbs. on me who just aren't getting their pullovers or back hip-circles, and after we do bars I am more worn out than they are, and last week I had shoulder pain for 3 days after- I had a shoulder injury that has not given me a bit of trouble in 8 years, and I really don't want to re-injure myself trying to help them! We don't do conditioning because it's a one hour class, so they simply don't have the strength to pull their body weight over the bar like that. And no amount of telling them to work on strength training at home is going to make it happen. I feel like its not fair to them that I can't put them up to the bar and walk them through it like I can with younger kids, and I also don't want them to develope body image issues- being a pre-teen is hard enough without a grownup saying you are simply to big to lift! Has anyone else had this issue, or any tips on how to safely teach them the basics on bars, because hurting myself isn't going to help them learn anything!

I have a 13 year old gymnast who recently started in my team. She has only done rec gymnastics until now.

She is really talented and has learned for example RO-BHS, FHS, FT etc in just a month. She learns everything I introduce her in just a few tries on every other events but bars. She has strong lower body but weak arms and upper body. She can do tap swings and just learned her BHC but that's pretty much all she can do. She has to learn kip if she ever wants to compete bars!

The other girls have their kips already and are working with more advanced skills. So I thought maybe it could work better if I made her a list about kip conditioning and drills to work by herself during bar rotation. And if she'll have time after the list is completed I'd teach her some "fun" stuff like squat on, baby giants etc.

What do you think about this list? Do you have anything to add? We usually spent 30 minutes on bars and we practice four times a week.

1. L - hang 3 x 10s
2. Pike hang 3 x 10s
3. "Kip" using a stick 10x
4. Stem rises 10x
5. Glide 10x
6. Spotted kips 3-10x (depends on how much time I have)
7. Hip rises hanging on bar upside down 10x
8. Leg lifts 10x
9. Resistance band 30x
10. Chin ups 10x

I think this kipping road is going to be long and hard but we will do our best and hope she learns it someday! Any words of wisdom?

I'm due June 9, and am wondering what the smallest amount of maternity leave I could realistically take is? When I talked with my boss in February I told her I'd take 6 weeks but she said that I might not get to work with my group when I got back. If I took just 4 weeks (which would really only be 3 because of 1 week overlap that the gym is closed), I feel like she'd understand my commitment to that group. But would i physically be able to spot like id need to? I am the better coach, but the other coach has been there longer.

Just curious if anyone has done or heard about the Professional Coach Diploma program at IGC? I've been coaching high school for the last 2 seasons and will be again this year, so thought about doing next summer as a way to prepare to jump back in to club coaching (which is the plan as of now), but other than an IG article a few years ago, I really don't know much about it. I feel as though my progression as a coach has been pretty limited during this time, I try to keep up to date with videos and articles and stuff, but in terms of hands on coaching I've been pretty limited.
Is it a worthwhile experience? What are the costs, requirements, time commitment? Is there a better way to get hands on coaching experience- I know USAG has a one day hands on class, but I figure this would be more intensive? Any info or insight anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated!
