So I was looking at the results for the US Elite Challenge held earlier in May and I was wondering about the disparity in the scores. The winner of the Senior women's was 124 something while the next highest score was 97 something and for the juniors it was only in the 60s. Did they do totally different things, passes judged on different things, more tumbling passes? I salute everyone who even made it and I am sure those are great scores, I just wonder about such a large range of scores.
Thanks.

HI, I have posted before about this struggle but each meet this season has gotten progressively worse. My DD is 8 and this is her first season to compete. She had some sort of mental block coming off of CHristmas break and went from doing level 6 tumbling skills to barely being able to do level 4. Some days she can do a backhand spring others she can't. She has no consistency anymore. Originally, the problem was just with tumbling but now it has spread to trampoline and double mini. She just gets so nervous that she literally can't complete passes in competition. She'll do a roundoff and stop. Or on double mini, she'll jump on the tramp and then just jump off without completing any skills. At practice, she can do her passes beautifully. In competition, she's so nervous she can't do them. Another issue is she seems to be afraid of one of her coaches. If she has this particular coach at practice (who is pretty hard nosed and old school and sometimes yells at the kids and makes them do conditioning exercises when they're not performing up to par) she completely flakes out at practice, too. If she has a coach she likes, she does OK. But when she has a bad day at practice, it takes her days to recover and get back to where she was. So it's constantly one step forward, two steps back. She fears one of the coaches, but I believe it's because she is very thin skinned and very very sensitive. This is a kid who would throw up before a field trip at school because she's so nervous. So I'm not necessarily criticizing that coach--who is very successful and experienced, by the way. It's just so frustrating because they say she has real talent. And obviously we know she is capable of doing much bigger things than she is currently doing because she has done them in the past.

I also think that while nerves are a problem, she is VERY negative. She constantly says she can't do something. Or, for example, at the last meet, before her comp time, she was saying how she didn't like the double mini trampoline they had at the meet. She said it wasn't as "bouncy" as what she's used to so she wouldn't be able to do well. I pointed out that I had been watching all morning and the majority of those who I had seen comepete on it had stuck their landings. It appeared to me that they were all doing really well on this particular tramp. But she wouldn't hear it. She went into that competition with it in her head that she couldn't do well because she didn't like that trampoline. I think she sabotaged herself. I don't think she purposefully went out and intended to do poorly. But I think her attitude played a HUGE role in psyching herself out of doing well.

We dropped her down a few levels on tramp and tumbling for this last competition to take some pressure off and this was probably her worst meet yet. She can now only qualify for JO on double mini. She wants us to take her out of tramp and tumbling for the regional meet so she can just focus on double mini since it's her only opportunity to qualify. Should I let her do that? Would that be a bad thing to do?

What do I do about her being scared of a coach? Is this normal? Is this coach's style bad or wrong? She is scared of this coach, yet I've seen her take advantage of "nicer" coaches at the gym.

Am I doing enough to support my child? I don't feel like I pressure her. I just want her to be successful because she says this is what SHE wants. And I believe she does. She cried for hours after the last meet and i just felt so bad for her and so disappointed for her. But I do not know how to help her.

I should also say that while I know it's taboo to gym hop, we don't really have any other gyms in our community, so we couldn't if we wanted to.

Please help. I'm just at my wits end. Thanks in advance!

She also placed 3rd on Double mini, which was the opposite kind of shocker because last qualifier she won with the highest score of all ages and made Easterns. So it goes to show you just never can tell!

I have been struggling for a long time now but haven't really progressed at all in the last 2 years. If I am not injured I am consumed by fear and if I am not consumed by fear I am injured.

I also recently went from being top dog in my gym to being shoved aside for some girl who just throws tricks. Her form is bad but she literly has no fear to do anything. This has happened before to me with a young boy who later fell on his head and hurt his neck real bad. Now she is all they care about and the gym makes special considerations for her all the time such as begging judges to up there scores so she can move up. (which they did) obviously I am bitter about that, but all specifics aside it just feels really really bad to have worked your butt off for almost 5 years and give yourself completely to something just to be pushed aside for someone else.

I made it to Nationals for trampoline and tumbling although as of today the coach won't go for my tumbling so it would only be trampoline. I have a seperate thread debating if I should go or not but regardless I have decided I am going to train through the summer and decide if maybe I should just do this rec. or quit altogether this fall.

That was until yesterday when we (me and new girl) were working on a new skill. Of course she got it almost immediately with no fear and I balked as usual. I can'e just do things, I need time to wrap my mind around it and go progressions and then I have to be a big chicken and balk and have a melt down panic vestibular attack and then I'll do it. Then I will do it a few time and balk a lot more times and won't "have" it for a year. Then I will fear I am going to fall horribly and hurt myself and then I do, it always fulfills itself and then I will water everything down, break it all down and build it back up slowly all over again.

I still have a gleam of "fun" and I always have hope and don't want to give up. But it is more work than fun and I am never going to just chuck skills and I have to work and work and work I am not talented, natural or gifted and I have the feeling that just does not cut it anymore.

I know I am really bitter right now and I will not make a rash decision but I am growing tired of this and I either need to find that spark again or stop. I really want to find that spark. I remember how awesome the journey was starting out. How I could not want to get back to the gym, how I would count the minuets until class. How I felt so light and free jumping on that trampoline how nothing else in life mattered at that moment just me and air. It was the best I have ever felt in my life and I sincerely hope I can have that feeling again.

I don't know what I am looking for in posting this. Support, maybe similar stories or just to put it out there. Thanks for reading.

I just took my two small daughters to their first competition to try it out and they loved it so much that they want to drop gymnastics all together! All we have is a very old Nissen tramp with original mat so we need everything! This gym is not wealthy so used items are all we could probably afford right now! Any information on gyms selling equipment would be so appreciated! I am in Texas :)
