Can anyone recommend any good gyms in Maryland (of course, it would be great if there was a great gym for Optional gymnastics in the area but we are willing to drive, north or south.) She is serious about the sport and very competitive so she wants to be a part of a good team.....anyone with knowledge about local gyms and their strengths and weaknesses would be appreciated. Thanks.

HI everyone,
My little girl just made team (yaay!!!) but she is still 5 and won't be 6 until the end of feb. So she will be training the new level 3 but not able to compete until after her bday (which will be 1 or 2 meets)
Then they are anticipating the next year she would train level 4 but compete level 3 until her bday when she can compete level 4.

What do you think? Hubby is very concerned how this will affect her...she has already expressed that she is mad that her friends on the team will be competing and she won't. She's going to be heartbroken when the other girls get to perform and win medals/ribbons and she has to sit the sidelines.

What should we do? What CAN we do?
The coaches say she has a ton of talent and it would be a shame for her not to train this level and grow her gymnastics and she absolutely loves doing it but I don't want her to be upset when the time comes (there will be 5-6 meets before she is eligible)

thanks!

My DD just made team (yay!!!) and considering we just started rec gymnastics this year...and now she's on team...well, it's been a whirlwind and I have a thousand questions!!

We were given a team parent contract to sign. Most of it seems pretty standard, based on stuff I've read on here (no CGM behavior - phrased differently of course; drop off/pick up on time; must be up to date on tuition and fees to compete; must purchase complete uniform for DD; coaching is to be done by coaching staff and that my job is to be a supportive parent; etc), but one thing struck me as something I wanted to ask you guys.

There is a clause that is bothering my husband - that by signing the contract we understand we are committed to the next year with DD's gym and if my DD doesn't continue team that there will be a buy out fee (excluding medical issues).

Is this standard?

My DD is only 6. She's gone from never doing gymnastics to going to team in less than a year (she's almost got her kip - only needs a light spot - so crazy to me!) and wants to do gymnastics all the time (on playdates, in the backyard, in the living room, etc), but my DH is concerned that the increased hours may be too much - she'll be going from 1 hour a week to 10 hours/week. While I don't think it's going to happen (she LOVES gymnastics and seems to have found something that her 6 year old heart is excited and passionate about), what if she burns out? That's DH's concern.

Is the buyout clause standard? (help put my husband's mind at ease...or not...lol)

Not sure if I titled this correctly!

My daughter is training Level 9 and will be starting HS in the fall.

Thus far, she has managed school work and gym hours (20, increasing to 23 next fall) just fine overall.

Her middle school didn't have any clubs so pretty much her activity was school/practice and relaxing :)

I have friends with kiddos who are not gymnasts but juniors/seniors. They all tell me that in HS it's important for them to be 'involved' as colleges look at what they've done.

Anyone out there with a senior who can speak to the college app process?

I'm curious if colleges see that a girl was at practice 20ish hours a week....don't they realize that's a big enough committment?!

My daughter is always on the High Honor roll, so I guess if things continue that way, she will be in National Honor Society....

She is hoping to join the HS gymnastics team, so she will have a winter sport at school.

That's some involvement, anyway!

It seems so strange to plan now as she's only just going to begin HS....but I feel like I'd love some perspective from those who have BTDT.

Mostly, I want her to do well in school and be happy, enjoying the experience!

thanks!

I posted a week or two ago about my daughters struggle with vault. This has been ongoing for quite a long time (6 months or more). They only practice vault every other week and she was only averaging 15 or so vaults on the weeks they did do vault. Well it finally clicked at Saturday's practice, she did 10 good ones on the higher mat that they never even really use. She had a meet Sunday and I was so nervous that maybe it was just a fluke but she went up and did 2 beautiful vaults!!!! She came out with 1st on floor, beam, bar, and all around and 2nd on vault at only her 2nd meet ever. Her first meet she got 2nd on beam and 3rd on bar and didn't place on the other 2 and 3rd all around. Her vault at her first meet was 6.9, she went up over 2 points. Huge improvement in one month and with twice as many girls to compete with this time. I know there were a lot of parents who said their kids were struggling too so tell them to not give up it will happen. The one drill they started doing before she got it that I think finally helped was that they would put a folded panel mat sitting the tall way between the vault mat and the spring board. This seemed to help them stop diving for the mat. Another girl in her group who has struggled with vault for over a year figured it out the same day as my daughter so I really think this drill was helpful since it was the first week they had ever used it. I'm more proud of that 2nd place metal than all the 1st places because she had to work so hard for it.

Our family has come to a gymnastics crossroads - to leave our gym or to stay.

DD has been at this gym since the beginning (except for one rec year when she was 4). It is a big gym, well known, great coaching, and a real together type atmosphere. We both love it there. But..... it doesn't train elite athletes, or want high performance kids. National, sure. College scholarship, sure. That isn't a focus, but if it happens great. But if you want more, it really doesn't work with their overall goals, and I can appreciate that.

But DD thinks she might want more. She's willing to work as hard as she needs to, and has some significant goals. She thinks in the two year or so horizon, and I have to say, when I was eight, I couldn't think much beyond that either. She's a good little gymnast (competed level 7 this year and training L8 and starting some L9 beam). But her coaches don't really push her.... I keep hearing "don't worry, she's only 8. There's plenty of time. ".

We went to open tryouts at another gym, where they have a history of training elite athletes, and not just a couple. They have a great HC. I'm not too familiar with the other coaches, but she'd be training with HC and someone else. They offered her a spot on the spot. We chatted about what she can do, and I mentioned the "don't worry, she's only 8". They said, "hey, she's already eight. If she wants to go far, we have work to do and should start now."

She would likely be fine for the next year or two in her current gym. But DH and I are thinking perhaps we should switch her now, and potentially she could be that much further along, given a jointly agreed on focus, and surely not behind even if she chose a less strict/intense path in the future. But she's only eight, loves her friends and her next year's coach. She acknowledges she'll eventually have to switch, and thinks the new gym would be the place....eventually. She's torn too.

Sorry for dragging on. As I write, the answer seems straight forward, and yet I'm still torn. After all, she's only 8....

At our annual extravaganza, we have a recital for the rec girls, an in house meet for our developmental teams, and an exhibition by our team girls. We make a big deal of it with ordering special leos for each group, real medals and trophies, and a big choreographed dance number for the team in addition to displaying some of the routines.

We have a mom who makes no secret of her lack of respect for our sport and is quite open about using gymnastics only as an enhancement for her daughter's dance career. So I guess I should not have been surprised when her daughter takes the floor in her new gymnastics leotard, fancy hair, stage make up, and..... wait for it............... the matching scrunchie placed about two inches above her right knee.

I really try to be a nice person. Seriously I do. And I have no bad feelings toward this poor child at all. But I still must confess that I lost it. I seriously lost it. As in had to hide behind my program so as not to embarrass myself and owe this poor woman an apology at a later date.

A couple of weeks ago, they asked me to sign her up for team tryouts (held today), so I did (figuring she'd end up on preteam). Nope! My DD made team!!! She's SO excited!!!!

She'll be training new level 3 (I think)....although, if I understand correctly, they want to wait to decide what she'll be competing until later. She's picked up so much so quickly that they want to see what she can do with more practice hours a week.

I'm excited and nervous, but mostly excited as we enter into the world of competitive gymnastics. I'm sure I'm going to have a 1000 questions. Don't worry, I'll use the search option on CB before asking them all. :p

I do find myself wondering, however, how much money I can make selling plasma.
