Clear Hips or Free Hips

Clear Hip or Free Hip Circles

This is our first article post on drills for a clear hip circle. Post as many drills as you can as a reply/comment to this article and we will move them into this article. Over time we will have a great database of clear hip drills all in one place.
  • If you don't have your clearhip yet, a great drill is to put a relatively tall mat/block right behind the bar. Do your attempted clear hip as normal, and when you come around, try to stand back on the mat. It really worked for my level six team last year, and has already helped several new hopefuls! -gracefulone
  • It also really helps to work them on a low strap bar. It takes away a lot of the friction and you can really crank them around. -|||JBS|||
  • Make sure your gymnasts can do a nice hollow body cast. -|||JBS|||
  • When trying to learn a freehip to handstand, have your coach spot you. Most gymnasts just don't understand how early you must shoot to make a handstand. You should be aiming for something on the ceiling in front of the bar, not behind the bar.
  • Hold a pool noodle or something over the bar and have your gymnast try to shoot and hit it with their feet. This will give them an idea of where they need to be.
