Wow! I was pleased with the results on the competition! I'm excited to see who is chosen for the US team and the upcoming competitions. It's too bad Ivana Hong is too young for this olympics...you have to be 16 to compete...right?

Ivana turns 16 in the Olympic Year, which would make her eligible to compete.

KKM, where do you see that at??? Last I read, Worlds & olympics min age would be 16 - no exceptions after 2008.... but still remain 15 turning 16 in the olympic year for 2008... I think its great if they lowered the min age

Ivana is currently 14, that's why I didn't think she was eligible (unless her birthday is later in the year). I thought the requirment was 16, but gymnasts who are 15 during the pervious year (who wouldn't be 16 until after the olympics) would be considered. If anyone can find the info please let me know.

Hammy, not sure about the 15 yr age at this time - I can't find anything to support this, but ya never know it could be in the works as KKm said... however I am certain that for 2008 the age is 16 (or turning 16 in that olympic year). Ivana turns 15 in dec 07 and 16 in dec 08 - which makes her age eligible for the 2008 Olympics... I can post the actual rules in a bit, but here is an excerpt from Wikipedia for now:

"The FIG imposes a minimum age limit on gymnasts competing in international meets. The term senior, in gymnastics, refers to any world-class/elite gymnast who is age-eligible under FIG rules.
Currently, gymnasts must be at least sixteen years of age, or turning sixteen within the calendar year to compete in senior-level events. The one exception to this rule is the year before the Olympics, when gymnasts who are one year shy of the age requirement may compete at the Worlds and other meets. For instance, gymnasts born in 1988 were allowed to compete in senior events in 2003. This is permitted to allow nations to qualify to the Olympics with their best teams, and to give emerging gymnasts some experience in major competition before the Olympics."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artisti...ics#Age_limits

This rule was supposed to change following the 2008 olympics as a no exception rule with the min age being 16 yrs as of the actual event.

This is from pg 26/27, reg. # 5.2 in the FIG rules:

Reg. 5.2 AGE OF PARTICIPANTS
For the official senior competitions of the FIG and for the Olympic
Games the participants must, in the year of the competition, have the following
minimum age:

Women's Artistic Gymnastics: 16 years (except that in the year
immediately preceding the Olympic
Games, gymnasts of 15 years of age are
authorised to participate in the World
Championships). From 2009, 16 years
without exception.

We watched both nights as well. My dd has always loved Carly Patterson. I think her new favorite is Shawn Johnson. Speaking of Olympic hopefuls, the Olympic Trials are coming to Philadelphia this year and I am getting tickets! It's only like 90 minutes away from me. We're excited to go. Maybe we'll get some autographs? She already met Carly last year. She bought her book and had it signed. She still takes it out to look at it!

IGM--thanks for clearing that up! I didn't even think about the fact that Ivana's birthday was in December. Hopefully we'll be seeing her in the Olympics then!
