SEATTLE -- USA's Kristy Powell from Colorado Springs, Colo., and John Roethlisberger from Minneapolis, Minn. are leading the preliminary competition at the 1995 McDonald's American Cup in Seattle, Wash., at the Seattle Center Arena.
Powell trains at Colorado Aerials and is coached by Tom and Lori Forster. This is only her second event as a senior competitor. Roethlisberger trains at the University of Minnesota and is coached by his father, Fred. John is a 1992 Olympian and three-time World Championships team member.
"I feel great and confident," Powell said. "I've been waiting a long time for my time and I thank God for what happened tonight. I didn't even think I'd make finals, but after the first two events I knew I could."
"I didn't expect Kristy to make finals, but I knew she had the potential to do well," said her coach Lori Forster. "We felt it was an honor to compete with Shannon."
Powell won vault with a 9.850 and bars with a 9.825. Amanda Borden from Cincinnati, Ohio, won beam with a 9.850 and floor with a 9.850. On the men's side, Bill Roth, from Temple University, won floor with a 9.550 and vault with a score of 9.500, while Mihai Bagiu of Albuquerque, New Mexico, won pommel horse with a score of 9.650. Belenki won rings with a 9.525. Dmitri Vasilenko from Russia won parallel bars with a score of 9.550 and Roethlisberger won high bar with a 9.625.The winners of each event won $1,000.
The top eight men top eight women from tonight's competition will advance to the finals on Saturday, March 4 at 11:30 a.m. Only two athletes per country are permitted in finals.

The International Mixed Pairs competition will take place Sunday, March 5 at the Seattle Center Arena. This unique event combines one male and one female gymnast to compete as a team. There are three rounds of competition and the winners are determined after round three.
