Sorry to hear about your injury. This reply is more for anyne reading this thread. Does anyone else go to chiropractic? I take my daughter 1 or 2 times a month depending on the gym work out. She has been doing gym for 5 years (we started when she was 3) and haven't had any type of injury. When I take her to the chiropractor mostly her hips, knees and shoulders are out of alignment. He will do ajustments to her and no more sore muscles for awhile. Just a suggestion for a little something extra to keep you gymnasts healthy. I figure it can't hurt.

I personally don't really trust going to the chiropractors because I've seen a lot of bad stuff come as a result, but some people swear by them. A lot of times things can be realigned without the jerking motions and what not...my neck is out of alignment and all I do is a few exercises two times a day and it's back to being fine. Also keeping body parts aligned can be done by stretching and exercising correctly, aslo, sitting up straight is one of the biggest things. Like I said, this is just my opinion and I know people who swear by them, so it all depends on the person.

TQM, I hope your dd is doing better.... I just wondered if the ortho had diagnosed anything. also I just wanted to say that 2nd and even 3rd opinions are certainly not out of the question before doing anything if it turns out to be more then just a pt recovery... I know that I sometimes take what a doc says to heart and don't even think to question it, but so many doc's say completely different things ... please let us know how she is doing when you get a chance - nic

Just got back from the orthopedic surgeon... they took x-rays and her shoulder joint looks completely normal! YEAH! The Dr. thinks that maybe she got a case of bursitis (maybe doing all of those kips when she hadn't done them so much before?), and she's also got a set of PT exercises to do for the next 10 days. . .

Unfortunately no upper body workout at the gym, which is disapointing since they're all working on the dive rolls, kips, etc now, but I guess the alternative is for her to do even more damage to her shoulder if we don't follow directions! So anyway, thanks again for all of your comments, you all are great!

She can't work her upper body (or at least NOT lift more than 10 pounds - HA) for at least 10 days.... so she'll go and work on her split leaps, splits, whatever else they'll have her work on. I know she'll be bored, but it's better than getting reinjured and being out for months!!!

TQM---that is really good news. Now some advice from a gym mom who has also spent some time getting her own kid rehabbed and is a RN. Did the ortho recommend something like Advil? If she does have bursitis(which will not show on x-ray) then that is an inflamation of the bursa sac and a typical overuse type injury. She can safely take Advil per directions on the bottle unless she has another medical condition that prohibits this. Don't just give if her shoulder is sore---give continuously for about 7-10 days.

Make sure she and the coaches really understand what she cannot do. As the shoulder feels better, she may try to talk them into doing skills she shouldn't do. I know at this age and this time of year, they so want to be working on the new stuff. My daughter had to sit out for 2 weeks watching her friends all get their flyaways last summer with her knee problem---just about drove her nuts.

Once her 10 days are up, don't just turn her loose. By then it will have been about 2 weeks since she will have done any bars, vault etc. Have her start with only a few kips and increase, same with vault and tumbling. She may grumble, but this is the plan my daughter's physical therapist uses(a former gymnast and coach)----gradually build back up. Also ice after every practice and have her continue the exercises she was shown by the doctor and then maybe add in some of the ones Hammy mentioned. Stress that you want her healthy for the season and it is only mid June. She has plenty of time, but if she pushes too hard, then she may be out/or not ready come meet time.

Thanks for all of the great advice Gym Law Mom... yes, she is to take motrin twice a day for the next 10 days.... Her coach was really good w/her when she went to gymnastics last time... no upper body work at all, and when the girls were working on bars, she had my daughter working on the floor with the "kip training bar". I didn't know what DD meant, but it was basically a bar that she would lie down on the floor and go through the range of motion of a kip (or whatever). And you know, I didn't even think about when she resumed full practice, but it does make sense to ease into it gradually... thanks for bringing that up as well!!!

I really appreciate the advice from people who have "been there, done that!"

PS. She's to do the PT exercises twice a day... not just once! So hopefully she'll be back up bouncing around really soon... well, at least two weeks anyway!

Excellent news!!!! Overuse hurting is going to be a commom thing as she progresses in gymnastics. Try to remember the PT exercises, so when her shoulder starts hurting again you'll have a heads up on some stuff to do. I'm so glad to hear that everything looks normal!
