I had a meeting last evening and one of the coach, who is also a judge, just told that next year we'll be switching to the JO. So it looks that, at least for our province, the change we'll be done in a year.

Wow well at least you will be leaps ahead with all the info here.

I think it will be fun for clubs to hop over the border to compete in the US.

Will we still keep CR?

Will we still keep CR?

I don't know. The meeting was about next season groups so I really just heard the information while discussing another subject.

I'd like it. It's a good program for smaller clubs. And a good way for rec gymnasts to enter the competitive stream. Unless the lower levels are about the same as CR, I hope it stays the same.

Lower levels definitely can work for CR. L2 is like CR3 L3 is like CR3AV and L4/5 is like specialiste. Though I find the bars are a bit less progressive in the early levels.

I agree it will be much easier for smaller clubs. But to go from your own routine as a P2 to a L4/5 compulsory routine will not be a good thing. I am trying to work how they will manage that.

I am very glad I decided not to be a CR judge. Those compulsory routines and music will wear on you pretty fast.

I have always liked that CR limits training hours, it does level the playing field a bit for smaller clubs competing against bigger clubs. Though I do know some clubs who serious manipulate those hours.

It will definitely be interesting to see how the kids adjust to the JO system. I am hoping all mine that will compete P2 or higher this year will be able to enter at L6 so they get to keep having their own routines. With our P1's it won't be as big of a deal as we give all our P1's the same floor routine to keep the cost down.

I know it is gonna be hard to get their bars where they need to be, I have lots right now that could easily compete L8 on floor, beam and probably vault but are about L6 on bars. I know it isn't just my club either based on what I have seen at meets.

Also wondering what will happen with CPN, I have heard that the future is undetermined. I hope it says, much more developmental in my opinion for most athletes headed towards the higher levels.

I really hope they keep the CPN as a separate stream. It really is such a nice progressive path.

I hope they keep it too. The program offers a lot of flexibility to the athletes as well, and starts the kids early understanding different start values, the importance of bonus, etc.

SO you never used FIG scoring?

We have used FIG for about 9 years in all levels right down to pre P1 levels. I am sure it will be fine, but it is just another stage in learning for everyone.
No, we used FIG scoring for our provincial girls until last fall, when we made the switch. It worked out Ok. It was tougher to determine the requirement changes for the different levels it seems.

I still think going from FIG scoring back to 10.0 is backwards. But I do see the merits of the program, given the success of US gymnasts.

I was going to ask a question about it but I realized we are still in the Canada forum so I will ask in WAG. :)

FIG scoring is really tough on the Provincial level girls, you are basically holding the little first year competing P1's to the same deduction standards as Olympians. Doesn't really make sense if you look at it that way.
Sure they have way different requirements, but is it really necessary to hold these standards?
It is hard for enough coaches to figure out FIG scoring, let alone trying to teach what is happening to your 8 year old.
Overall it should be a positive, there is definitely be an adjustment for all, but after a couple years it should all be running smoothly and all transitional problems should have settled.

Are the deductions harder in FIG or is it just relative to the difference of being out of 10? I really don't know a lot about scoring. I just look for the smile after the event and let that be my guide?

There are differences in deductions. For eg. A fall in FIG is 1.0 whereas it is 0.5 in JO.

I guess that is a huge difference if you consider the difference in the top scores can be less than that! I think it is too confusing for me so I will watch the smiles and rely on those great chalk bucket friends to keep me in the loop!
