Hi All,

When I signed my DD up for gym. this past February, I had no idea that she would be even considered gymnastics team material...as she was already 7 (and I thought that was only for the girls who started when they were very little) and had she never done any gym before...

But, she seemed to take to it - like a fish to water. And, was invited to join one of their team development classes...a few months after starting gym....now she's on pre-team.

Here's the problem....her gym is a few minutes from our home but her school is far from her gym. Very long story...I commute a long way to work and her school - although it is far - is very good (and close enough to my job so I can pick her up in time).

Anyway...I am now worried about - how - I will be be able to make this work - when - she starts Level 3 team. (I don't know when that starts - but - I imagine it won't be for awhile since she has a long way to go with beam).

I have thought about switching her to another location - same gym - but different location (they are a chain). HOWEVER, I love LOVE her gym - at the location where - she goes.

The coaches are the BEST. I know she is in good hands every time I take her there. They are super knowledgeable, nurturing, supportive, motivational and know how to keep it fun.

Furthermore, my DD has really bonded with them and her team mates are great.....

But - I am worried about how I could get her there for 3:30pm practices. I completely understand if they would have a problem with this...as it would not seem fair to the rest of the team if she gets there - super late (I mean at least an hour late).:(

So....I am not sure what to do....

I have thought about emailing the head coach...to see if we could meet and discuss how I could keep her there at her gym - when she's on team. Maybe ask if it she could make up missed practice time - by taking privates???

I love her gym so much - that I wouldn't mind paying for the privates - just to keep her there...and feel sad when I think about how this might not work....as she would have to get to practice late...and I'm sure that's really frowned upon...:(

Thanks for *listening*...and any advice would be great...

Personally, if you feel like she's getting good coaching where she is, I would worry about it to much until she is close to making team.

Both of the gyms that my DD has been at have pretty large level 3 teams so they have multiple times that the level 3's practice. Both at our old gym in FL and our new gym in CA, none of our middle school age level 3's would have been able to make 3:30 because of school dismissal times. At our old gym they preferred for the young 3's to practice earlier but they allowed several of the younger ones to practice later with the older 3's to accommodate parents work schedules

My DD is late to gym for every class. She is about 1 hour and 15 min late. I do think sometimes that she has a disadvantage because she misses so much class compared to the other kids but the gym works with us and she actually scores pretty good most of the time so it doesn't bother me as much anymore. If anything, I would give it a try when the time comes and see how it goes. As they move up in levels at least at our gym the start times get later so I am looking forward to that when it happens. Good luck.

You will also have an advantage if she stays and eventually trains later. It'll be easy for you to go home and pick her up later.
At a gym close to your work, you'd either end up working more or waiting around a lot before a long drive to get home afterwards.

There's no harm in asking (when she's invited to team) about alternative training times or missing the first hour or so. If they say no, then you find another option.

I also wouldn't worry about it yet! Our gym changes practice times every year so even if level 3 is practicing at 3:30 now, it doesn't mean level 3 will be practicing at 3:30 next year. The schedule depends upon many different things. We also have more than 1 different practice group at the lower levels.

I agree that you may be stressing over nothing. Our gym offers team practice at various times, depending on the day of the week and girls need to choose 4 out of 6 sessions. And they have changed to times for those sessions each year to better fit the majority of the team.

I can't tell if your worry is school dismissal time, commute time or your work schedule. They probably have different solutions, so wait and see what happens. Some of us use gymnastics to get a waiver from PE class, resulting in earlier dismissal time from school. I use a car service to get DD to gym for practices that start before I get home from work. And, sadly, in today's world you really can't assume that you will always be at the same job.

So, as others have said, wait until the actual invitation occurs, figure out the challenges and then talk to the HC. It's pretty unlikely that you'll be invited on Friday and expected to be there on Monday -- you'll have time to work out the schedule shifts that are the result of changing practice expectations.
