She is 5 (6 in a month).
She can't even touch her toes without telling me it hurts. It seems to hurt when she rounds her back.
Her gym class does some back bridging and kick over stuff but it's not much, really. However...she seems to spend her life doing handstands to bridge on our ottoman and then kicking back over. I do not encourage it...but I don't stop it either.
Should I be concerned? She shouldn't be hurting this young!!!
It's not terrible...I didn't even notice she was hurting til she told me.
I had her lay on some ice and gave her a strict NO gymnastics at home rule for a while.

Does she have any bruising? Did she sleep funny? I ask this because my DD (9) complained of back pain one day after camping out and sleeping outside. (LOL! My back hurt too). She was fine the next day.

No bruising. She actually started talking about it today (no gym class and no gym at home today either) after last night sleeping in her old toddler bed (she's pretty small still) in her sister's room while we have out of town company. I guess we'll just wait and see...makes me so paranoid though!! I hate anything that has to do with back or neck *shudder*.

^^^^^^^^^^! Listen to Bog! She knows this topic very very well, unfortunately!

Yes, take her to the doctor, preferably a specialist, and not just her regular pediatrician!
My DD first started complaining about back pain when she was about 6. At first I ignored it. Then I talked to her pediatrician at her next annual physical, and he said she was fine. She was complaining on and off during the next year, and I asked him again at the next physical, and again he said she was fine. Finally, when she was 8, and I found CB, and I read here how serious the back problems could be, I took her to the Sports Medicine doctor. By then she had a stress fracture in her back. It was a year ago, and she is still struggling with her back.
Don't wait. Even if it's nothing, it's better to take her and figure out what's going on now, before it becomes more serious.

Well...it's still sore this morning so she isn't doing gym today. I have her on some ice and we will take it easy. It's been fewer than 24 hours of it hurting so we aren't going to take her in to the doc yet, but if it's not improved by tomorrow, then I will.
It doesn't prevent her from doing all her normal stuff, it seems to be pretty much when she bends over or rounds her back. Sheesh, I really hate back stuff. Why can't it be her leg or something!?!
Thank you all for your advice. It's nice to have a place to go and ask for it! :)

If it just started, then I guess it's okay to wait a bit.
But the fact that it doesn't prevent her from doing stuff doesn't mean anything. DD was doing gymnastics and competing (with BWOs and BHSs) for two years with her back pain. It was part of the reason I didn't take her to the doctor's sooner. I thought, surely if it was something serious, she wouldn't be able to do all that stuff that she does.

Don't hope for a leg problem... But your right.... Backs are very hard.

It's now Saturday and she has no pain. If she continues with NO pain, I'm thinking of letting her do gym class on Tuesday. Is this an ok plan? If the pain comes back in any way we won't be waiting, we'll go straight to the doc.

If she is pain free then yes, have her go to gym. Instruct your dd to stop if anything causes pain. Also make sure the coach knows to look out for signs of her being in pain.

Can I just go out on a limb here and say maybe it was the sleeping in the toddlers bed that did it?
I am serious.
Regardless, it is probably a good idea to stop doing thise tricks at home? I would not and do not allow my girl to do those kind of tricks at home. I am a mean mommy. It is what it is...and i tell her that is what the gym is for, goodness knows we practically live there anyway!

I really hope it was just the toddler bed. Although she is still in it and will be 'til our company leaves. :) I could put her in a sleeping bag on the floor.
Thanks for everyone's advice. For the record, I do allow cartwheels, kickovers, handstands, etc...but definitely nothing more. Just want you guys to know that I'm not one of 'those' parents. :)
We might be limiting even more now though. :/

Sounds reasonable. I might just take extra care in limiting skills that involve any kind of backbend. Hope she remains pain free

you never know with especially young children. You should take her to see the Dr. even though the pain is gone. It could be nothing or it could be something. Its better to be safe than sorry.
