Hi my daughter is in level IL 9 and has been training super hard for her first international gym comp. The aloha gymfest Hawaii!! On Xmas day she dislocated her elbow no structural fracture but a slither of bone pulled off but they are not worried ... I have prepared her for the fact she can't compete but we see our ortho sports physio on Thursday but just wanted to ask what's the recovery times been for others??

Hi, so sorry to hear this. She must be devastated.

No idea on the recovery time, sorry. Doesn't sound good :( Good idea posting to the main forum, you are more likely to get a helpful response there.

Hope she recovers well and you get good news. Or at least she gets to enjoy a trip and support her teammates?

Best wishes to you both :)

One of my gymnasts did the exact same, dislocated with slight bit of bone chipped off, honestly from the experience she had and that I know other gymnasts from other clubs have had with this injury she will not even be back to full training by the time of the meet, (obviously it could be different in her case though) my gymnast wasn't even allowed to handstand for about 6 weeks, has it been put in a cast? That will have a big factor to recovery time as well but my big advise would be done rush the recovery, it could take up to a year to be back where she was before it happened (unlikely to be that long but could be) think of it as would you (she) rather rush the recovery to do one meet and have complications throughout her gymnastics career or miss this one and wait until the next one comes about where she can go and smash it! There also might be psychological recovery she will have to over come as well, the not wanting it to happen again so being scared to do certain things, my gymnast did hers on bars but when she came back to training was super scared to tumble not sure why she wasn't scared of bar, guess you put lots more force on the elbow on floor

Anyway keep us updated and I am sending her lots and lots of speedy recovery vibes

Oh dear... It doesn't sound good. I would be surprised if any doctor or physio would endorse her competing. My gymnast had to go as an injured passenger on her first overseas gym trip, so I know the heartbreak both now and ahead. But, it's IL9 and if she's going to go all the way, she's going to have to let her elbow heal really well. It's not worth risking it for one competition, despite how amazing it will be.

Hoping there's some good news from the specialists though!

Hi so she is in surgery now to have the bone reattached turned out her ligament tore the end of the elbow off with it... So no Hawaii comp but hopefully can still travel on the 13th ... Thanks for all your replies

Thank you surgery went well we find out tues if she is fit to fly to leave wed! She has had no pain killers since the op so that's a good sign .. Yes she will have a few weeks in cast the. Surgery to have wires removed at 4-6 weeks then start the physio rehab so another comp season out...
