Ah, this seems to be a problem every year for me to. For me, it all depends on the kid. Some kids I can just "make" them do it, others I really have to take my time. For me, practice makes progress and little by little they get it. Sometimes it can be difficult because I'm just waiting for the...
Good to hear it. I love being able to end on a good note. Congrats to both you and your gymnast- it sounds like my practice last Saturday! One more skill down!
I know this is totally late, but please feel free to PM me. My husband and I were both competitive gymnasts- I competed though level 10 and I now coach, he competed through level 10 and through college- we both went to the United States Naval Academy and have a good idea of the USMA team and so...
According to the Table of Penalties for Level 6 Uneven Bars (updated page 170), the degree is measured at the extension of the upswing from a "line from shoulders to mid-point of lowest body part". With that said, our gym trains that it is on the upswing when she shifts her wrists. I can't find...
Trust your coaches and the progressions they have for your kip. For most of my girls, as long as they have a strong core, it's just a timing issue. If you don't get a lot of time in the gym, you can always do core conditioning at home :)
I definitely wouldn't say a 7 year old is a late starter. I actually prefer teaching 7 year olds basics over 4/5 year olds because usually their attention span is longer and they are willing to listen. Your main job at this point is supporting your daughter, and it seems like you're doing a good...
Just to follow up, we have another meet this Sunday, but she officially got it tonight at our open workout (after hours of drills!). Whew, one skill down, a million more to go.
Ha. She let her go. She thought it was adorable. It was a bit of a pain (when she came back she re-did her routine), but I think now they realize that when i ask if they need to go, it's not so much of an option, lol
We ordered in June for levels 5-10 & Prep Opt (our 2's, 3's, and 4's wear a short sleeved leo). We were assured we'd have them by Halloween. Our first meet was October 31st and we've had 2 meets since. We won't get our leos now until after Christmas! It's crazy.
I'm with JBS on this one. Although it can be difficult, I'd stick with whatever the coach decides and try to make alternate plans as well to rebuild strength. (I've dealt with enough HC's/Owners in the past to learn to really pick my battles.) Can she come to open workouts (if that's an option)...
As a coach, although I don't think my little ones can 'handle' the competitions and skills better, they certainly do better with the fear issues. (sometimes they do better at competitions too, because they don't hold themselves to such high standards like the older girls- many of them do not...
Since we all have rough days (I had one today) I thought it would be funny to share what my level 2's learned this past weekend- it is unacceptable to stop in the middle of a beam routine, climb down and ask the judge to go potty.

No joke, one of my level 2's (at her first meet) was more...

Just to follow-up: Today was the meet and I decided against spotting her. She did not make the front hip circle, but at least she fell with straight arms and squeezed legs. We're hoping this is the week she gets it. Unfortunately she was the second gymnast to go on bars for the entire meet and...
That's what I'm leaning toward. She's very close and has beautiful form. I've tossed around the idea of letting her arch to make it around, but I really would rather her just learn the skill correctly, even if it takes more time. I'm not worried about her getting injured, just the deductions...
Hello everyone! I'm looking for advice for several of my compulsory girls. I coach levels 2-6 at our gym, which happens to be a YMCA. I moved about 4 months ago for my husband's military orders, and I came from a private gym. I have been coaching these girls for the last four months, and about a...
Hello all! My husband and I have recently decided to join the Chalk Bucket. We were both competitive gymnasts and competed as Level 10's. (He also competed in college- which did not offer a women's team, unfortunately.) I competed in Region 5, he competed region 7, and I have coached in region 7...
