WAG Are vacations really not okay??

I agree that taking vacations/family time etc is important. As a coach, I will never discourage it but may give stretching homework, lol! That said.... all gymnasts are different. Some go on vacay, come back refreshed and bounce right back to where they were at. Some go away for a week and...

    WAG Severs duration?

Adding that her Severs pain lasted well over 18mo total, just the 2 major flare ups where she was really limited were a few months each. She wore the cheetah cups and did her regimen throughout, those were just the times it was so bad she needed to limit herself. She has had pretty much every...

    WAG Severs duration?

It is very individual. My DD (now 14) has had two serious Severs flare-ups (during which she could not tumble or vault even with cheetah cups). Both lasted a few months, even with chiro/PT assistance and diligent massaging as described above.

    Parents Pre Team tryouts

I’m the director of our gyms preteam and in charge of our tryouts. I would appreciate practice ready appearance:leotard, hair pulled back, ready to focus and show effort. Couldn’t care less about whether the hair is in any certain style. I look much more at how the girls handle the tryouts.

    ChalkBucket 2019 Upgrade

Thank you JBS for the update and for everything you do!! I like the new format, looks clean. Hoping to see the social groups back to working soon! Thank You to Bogwoppit and Geoffrey Taucer. I am not a super vocal member here, but I have learned a lot from you. Huge respect!

    WAG Something always hurts

Heh. Yes, if the kid is a little bit unlucky, sure. My DD is 14 and a second year L8. Currently, she has been in a knee brace (growth/hormone related pain, quad tendinitis and kneecap tracking incorrectly) for the past 7-8mo. She is also in a boot for a bone bruise to her first metatarsal...

    Parents Success without pre-team?

I coach (and select kids for) preteam, and I also coach Level 3 ( the entry level for competitive team at our gym). Every year we have a couple of kids who, for one reason or another, never did get recommended for or tried out for preteam. If they have what we require for starting L3 training...

    WAG Sharing Leotards

Buying a second hand competition leo is usually a great deal, on the condition that it has been washed correctly and looks good (as stated above, some girls are harder on leos than others, and some don’t know how to wash them correctly). At our gym, second hand competition leotards are usually...

    Parents Why does our gym...

As a coach of younger children who are serious about their gymnastics (preteam, TOPs and L3 mainly) I absolutely rely on stations and drill to keep the girls occupied and doing something worthwhile as we are working on events. I like to keep them constantly moving with bits and pieces of...

    WAG Sever's experts

X-brace didn’t work for my Severs kid, nor did it work for my plantar fasciitis kid... but, another girls at my DDs gym loved it enough to order her own after DD let her try it, so it is totally individual. For My Severs kid, the cheetah cup in combination with the massage linked above and...

Parents using deodorant a required skill?

Meh, that is a non-issue for me but I respect you if you feel differently. Older DDs ballet mistress gave the “deodorant speech” at the time they hit a certain level (generally around age 10-12). Wasn’t an issue for my kid at the time but it didn’t bother me. Gymmie DDs Coach is male and less...

    WAG School work

My oldest (jr in HSand also doing college classes) is not a gymnast but a serious dancer (similar commitment and schedule). Sleep and social life are the sacrifices.

    WAG Ozone leos

I don’t care for Ozone leo fit for older girls. It is really good (and durable) for my younger preteamers but we tried using them for practice leos for our team and ALL the older girls hated the fit. It’s very “cheeky”, for lack of better terms.

    Parents Travel meets- schedule

Not in our experience. We have a travel meet (fly away) that usually doesn’t post the session info until 2-3wks beforehand. We have a cheap airline that does weekend special to this destination, but the last couple of years my DDs session has been early Friday which means we cannot use the cheap...

    WAG Level 3 bar height

Level 3 coach. At meets we either lower the bar one step or add an 8” for the shorties (allowed in the code). Which one we do kind of depends on the rest of the girls we are rotating with and if anyone else needs a lower bar. For practice, we usually leave the bars as is and just add the 8”.

Parents Does your gym have a cheer-leading team?

Yes, but it is a separate entity and practices at another gym location. There is very little interaction between the programs, with the exception of the higher level cheerleader having mandatory tumbling classes with skilled gym coaches at “our” gym. We do occasionally have some gymnasts that...

    WAG TOO WARM!

AC, lol! I know that’s not super helpful and I know that isn’t even done in Scandinavia (Swede here, living in the US), but there is no way we could have practice in our desert climate without it. It gets to be in the triple digits (close to or above 40celcius) here regularly and the gyms are...

Parents How many gymnasts on a team/per coach

Generally at our gym we try to keep it to around 8/1 for compulsories. Right now our L3 team holds steady at 20girls and there are two coaches (me being one) but the way our practices are set up, it works just fine. Quality is better than quantity and the L3’s are “experienced enough” to not...

    Parents Communication Issues? Disorganized?

We do spring compulsories too. All our move ups happened before summer training started. It IS good that your DD is training the L3 skills as she should be, but I would want the official word and change in training groups as well. I couldn’t imagine (as a coach) wanting to train budding L1’s...
