    WAG What is modified optionals??

Modified Optionals is AAU. It is meant to be for gymnasts that aren't quite ready with all the skills necessary for level 7, but they are beyond the compulsory levels skillwise. Excel is USAG and is used at some gyms as a similar concept although that is not its purpose per USAGs description.

Parents Point Deductions for Hair Length

I put my daughter's hair in a pony tail and then braid it in 2 braids and tuck the braid under. She ends up with 2 braided loops. We started this because because she sometimes would step on her pony tail in practice when doing certain skills. We didn't want to take any chances. This is her...

Parents AAU vs. USAG - What's the Difference???

I think it depends on where you are also. In our state those options you listed aren't allowed in AAU (we compete state rules, not national rules--not sure if every state has their own AAU rules or not). My daughter is L4 and does the same routines as USAG except beam is not timed and they can...

    Parents A glimmer of excitement.....

We have been to the City museum also and both my kids loved it. Sounds like you will be having a fun meet season (both parents and kids). Our first meet is coming up in October and my dd is super excited and I am looking forward to it as well. We don't usually have very many hotel stays during...

    Parents Your DD/DS... Go!

Dd is 10 and just finished competing L4. They train skills in the summer and move girls up according to the skills they have at the end of the summer...so we shall see. Her goal is to score out of L5 (new 4), so that she can move up to prep-op (our gym doesn't do L6--new 5 and does one year of...

Parents Brag alert! My dd's a KIPPER!!!! ...and it only took a year!

That is great! My dd got her kip last week too...only once and it wasn't the prettiest kip, but she made it. Hers has been a long time coming as well and she was really excited. Congratulations to your dd!:D

WAG GK leos - sizing question

I also feel it should fit your dd. My dd is a small 10-year old (about the size as a lot of 7-8 year olds) and she still wears a CM. she did have two CM that she just recently outgrew, but she could still get them on, they were just a little snug. My dd is getting close to finally moving to a...

WAG WAG: Uptraining and New Skills

Cartwheels and back walkovers on beam Front handsprings, dive rolls, round off bhsbhs on floor (my dd can already do a robhsbhs, but if she gets it straighter, she gets to move on to robhsbt) vaulting "for real" over the table..this is exciting stuff when you get out of L4 :) Kips (almost there)

WAG Scoring and Competing Order Question

At my dd's meets, the order is random. There are usually 12-16 girls in a squad and the starting person rotates every event. (For example, if there are 12 in a squad on the second apparatus the 4th girl will start and the first 3 girls will be the last three and it continues like that each...

WAG Anyone know about AAU 3 bars routine? squat on?

The AAU 3 bars routine where we are does not have the squat on. However, there are options in many of the routines. There aren't bonus' for these options, just choices in how to do the routine. For example, on the L3 AAU floor routine, girls can do a back walk-over or a back handspring or on...

Parents Balancing gymnastics with 3 other kids.....

We usually try to split up, so that there is a parent at both kid's events. Occasionally there has been a conflict that has led to one child without a parent at their event (usually my son since he is the oldest) This happened once because dd had a large meet out of the area requiring an...

    Parents Carpooling question

I think I would expect the mother to offer something, either to drive the driving mother's daughter sometime, to pick up or gas money. Of course the driving mother is going anyway (and maybe she would say that it is ok and won't take the money) but it is always nice to offer in order to show...

WAG Any Deductions on wearing grips in Level 4 Uneven Bar meets?

I am not a judge but at dd's gym, they do not like the Level 4 girls to wear grips. There is one girl that wears them, but she came from another gym and wore them there. A couple of girls have asked for them, but the coaches have told them no. I think maybe it is just a gym preference type of...

Parents Competition leos... how to know if it's too small!?!?

It does sound tight. However, I do know that the first time my dd tried on her competition leo, she said it didn't fit. She said the sleeves were way too tight (long sleeve leo) and it was definitely tighter than some of her workout leos. She ended up wearing it for two years after that (and it...

    WAG NCAA Meet???

After reading this post, I brought this up to my dd and she was really excited. I think we might go to a UF meet soon too. Thanks for putting the idea in my head. :)

WAG Does your gym do this?

I wouldn't like this at all. What I really find interesting is that what age group you are in can make a difference. For example, Girl A can get a higher score than girl B but place lower because her age group was more competitive. Overall, I don't think this would motivate anyone.

WAG Compete at level 3 or just skip it?

In L3 AAU, gymnasts do handstand flatback for vault just like L4. Different programs have slightly different routines. Even within L3 AAU, there are different "types" of AAU--AAU National rules and AAU Florida rules for example. There are differences in routines for these as well. For example...

WAG Compete at level 3 or just skip it?

If she wants to compete, I would let her. My dd loves the competitions and it motivates her to improve. All kids are different, but this works for my dd. As an above poster said, if she would need a different leo than she will be using in the fall, I would skip it as that can get costly, but...

Parents New here with a boys gym/team question

I would start by finding out which gyms have boys' competitive programs (not all do). I am assuming you are asking because your son's current gym doesn't have a competitive program for boys? If not, you could ask the coaches at your current gym if they have any recommendations. If they do...

    Parents New and Hoping

My dd broke her foot at the end of September and was in a walking boot for 4 weeks. She went to every practice for conditioning as well. After they took the boot off, she was given limited release. She wasn't allowed to do anything with pounding. When she finally was fully released, it took her...
