What exactly is an elite gymnast?

The recent threads on elite gymnastics has me wondering what exactly an elite gymnast is/does. Are these gymnasts who are hoping to make Olympic teams and do international competitions representing the US? Are there other events for these gymnasts to compete in? Do people who are not interested in represting the US in competition become elite gymnasts? (For the record, I have no interest in my dd ever becoming an elite gymnast - I'm just trying to wrap my head around what one is and why one tries to become one.)

yes, yes, no & it is pursued because it is the highest challenge & endeavor in sport. in any sport.
