    Parents Question About Private Lessons

So my daughter has had a few private lessons now so I thought I'd share the experience. First off, it was mentioned that privates are a cash cow for the gym. At our gym, the money goes straight to the coach giving the lesson. I'm not sure how that works itself out, but I communicate directly...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

I'm satisfied with how things turned out. They started by saying they didn't see any advantage to her taking privates, then when I told her about the ADHD she saw how it might help DD, but there were no promises or mentioning that could lead to team. As I said, it's all about DD. She says she...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

The same coach called back and said the 2 coaches she talked to about DD said they don't think she's serious. That she is social and fun and loves the gym but they don't view her as wanting more than that. No talk about abilities, which I know aren't superstar gymnast but she does well enough...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

There are two other gyms in the area. A little research tells me that one of them was bought out by someone else a few years back and their reviews say they have basically gone downhill since then. The red flags seem to be the large ratio of students to coaches, even for the little kids, and a...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

And since that hasn't happened it kind of implies (although I'll admit it's not directly said) that that isn't the case. Just my interpretation. But I don't want to dwell on the negative, so I will just move on. Thank you for this. The only reason I initially asked about privates was because...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

I think if they said "let's do privates all summer, then she can go to pre-team in the fall" that would be a huge red flag. They aren't promising anything. I don't even know if when they call back they will say private lessons are the right thing to do. All I know us that I have a kid who wants...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

A business is trying to make money? What is this world coming to? I get it, I appreciate the input. I don't think the gym is a bad gym if I ask about private lessons and they make them available.

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

You are aware that they didn't suggest private lessons, they are simply responding to my inquiry?

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

I can't say for sure the gym is encouraging it. Nothing has been decided yet. The coach I spoke to said maybe one class and one private would be good for her, but she is speaking with one of DD's current coaches before they give any more input. I'm not sure if privates would have even been...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

I wanted to thank everyone again for their input. This morning I got a call from one of the coaches. She said she had a slip that said I was requesting private lessons for DD. So I discussed the situation with her. Told her of DD's interest in becoming a team gymnast and that my husband and I...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

It's nearly impossible to talk to a coach before/after class. The place is a madhouse. I left a message for the director exactly a week ago and I was thinking if I didn't hear back from her tomorrow I would make a call and see who I can talk to. The receptionist/person at the front desk was of...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

For the younger groups they are really good with the ratios, I noticed that early on. In the preschool class her group had no more than 8 and there were always 2 coaches. They do some warming up together and then split them into two different groups for the actual class. This is the same system...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

I want to start by saying I am at the gym now, on my ipad so answers will be shorter, and please excuse any typos! Because it's all so secretive, this is what I fear. This sounds very familiar, I think I may have even posted in this thread. I will be sure to check again though. I thought I...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

Well, when she started in the preschool group at 4 1/2 she was with a bunch of 3 year olds. And I'm constantly reading about 4 year olds already in a pre-team group so it makes me feel like she started late.

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

And that's why I'm here asking. I just feel like she's trailing behind in the gym the way she trails behind in school because of her ADHD. She went through 75% of her first year of school just barely holding on by the skin of her teeth. She gets good grades but that's because she gets one on one...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

It's because of the ADHD. Her lack of focus I think has kept her from learning as much as she could have. We have seen a difference in school and I'm now seeing it in the gym. I'm afraid she might just get passed over once she hits the 6 and over group (which is the rec class following...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

Thanks for the suggestions. They have a pre-team, I have a friend whose daughter was pulled from the kindergarten class several months ago for that group, they call them the Dynamites. They have since moved her up to the next level. I seem to recall them making the moves around the end of the...

    Parents Question About Private Lessons

DD will be 6 in a couple months. She didn't start gymnastics until 4 1/2. She did the preschool class for about a year and she has been in the kindergarten class for about 9 months now. The school she attends has a special format for kids who are heavily involved in extra curriculars and I...

Parents Advice for ADHD child on team...maybe too immature?

I just wanted to say thank you all for your thoughts in this thread. My DD will be 6 in a few months and was diagnosed with ADHD just last week. She is on a low dose of Concerta that seems to be working well for her. She is more focused in school and seemed greatly improved after just one...

    Parents Tumbling Mat?

I bought my daughter one from Tumble Trak too. It has a line for beam practice on one side and hand and feet placements for cartwheels on the other. It was simple and it makes her happy.
