Coaches Handstand Flatback Vault Help needed

Can you do "rabbits" or something to that effect? There are a bunch of versions I use. Kick up to handstand on tramp, bounce on knees and then back to handstand. When they first start out I make them keep their hands on the tramp. Once I know they wont throw their back out (read: can be tight) I...

    WAG Backwalkovers on Beam

@dunno I've seen it done on high beam, but have never used it there/have never felt the need. I start on floor with a light spot once they can back bend well. Progress to by themselves, then on a foam floor beam, then on a low beam with a spot and finally by themselves. This isn't an overnight...

    WAG Backwalkovers on Beam

Confidence is crucial, but I think some gymnasts get scared because they feel they dont have enough control in their back walkovers. I like to do a drill on the floor (and then on the beam), where the gymnast stands in passe and then, on one leg reaches back into a back bend (ending in a bridge...

WAG What is your state meet qualification score?

@kandkfunk -- you are stating Oregon qualification scores right? Oregon actually has two state meets, fall and spring for compulsories. Correct me if any of the following is wrong. Fall state is determined by placement at sectionals. I believe it's top 72 from levels 3-5, with a minimum 32.00...

    WAG Forced to scratch

Landed funny how? My rule is always safety first. If there was any question that she would have been hurt had she competed, I would say yes, definitely scratch. There is absolutely no reason to risk an injury early in the season with a skill going wrong. Yes, sitting out one floor routine...

Coaches Conditioning Lists (Pre-Team to L6)

I never assigned home conditioning, ever. That being said often rep/conditioning is dependent more on the kid/group of kids than the level. Also my conditioning lists tend to very around what that group kids needs most. Obviously all major muscle groups need work but things can be played...

Coaches Do you write lesson plans?

When doing rec lesson plans it's usually just what drills I want to use. All of the gyms I've worked at have had set skills that kids need to have to move up. So usually I start with those (and add in the things I think the kids need), and the build the drills out from there. I generally know...

Coaches Do you write lesson plans?

ALWAYS. I'm totally neurotic about this. I want to have a plan for the day. That being said, a lot of the time it needs to be adjusted, based on equipment, space it. The planning level though differs for the different levels I teach though. When I teach rec classes, because they're short and...

    WAG Wrist Rips

@dunno, I haven't actually tried this method, but found the vid interesting. Thought I would throw it out there and see what people thought.

    WAG Wrist Rips

Al Fong put up this video on how he does wrist taping a while ago.

Coaches Beam basics (leaps & jumps)

I totally agree with iwannacoach, no one way is perfect for every kid. I teach things one way (usually the way I think will work best for most) generally and if it obviously isn't working for a kid we change it.

Coaches Beam basics (leaps & jumps)

I (personally) want them turning the way they split. Ie. if their right leg split is dominant/the way they split jump best, I want them turning to the right and starting with their right foot in front. That GENERALLY but not always means that they'll also cartwheel on their right leg.

Coaches Beam basics (leaps & jumps)

When I teach jumps (especially starting out), I have kids start with arms out to the side. The problem I find with starting with arms up is when they swing down their chests drop (this is to be avoided at all costs). So I have them start arms out to the side, drop them down to their sides...

Coaches Do you scratch events and why?

My personal philosophy is to not put kids out there without having ALL of their skills. I want them to feel like they can be competitive and successful and are on par with or above the rest of the field. I want to instill confidence in them, and so I won't put them out there to try something...

    Coaches How do you deal...

Personally I wouldn't let her workout. You either do the conditioning and the workout or you don't. If she didn't do the conditioning from the day before she can either come in and immediately complete it and then join the workout, and condition with everyone when time comes again. Or, she can...

    WAG Conditioning for Rec kids?

It really depends on the level of the rec class (beginning, intermediate, advanced etc). Often in beginning class just the shaping work that I do ends up being enough conditioning. I tend to spread out conditioning in other rec classes so it isn't done all at one. I try to set up a circuit on...

Coaches older L4 can not finish kip

One that I like to use when kids are JUST THAT CLOSE are single leg jams. ideally she'll get to the point where she can do it with a straight leg and not hook her knee. A lot of the time after a few days of those they get the feeling of getting their shoulders over the bar. Hope that helps!

    Coaches Pre pre-team

Firstly I would say handstands, handstands, handstands. There are sooo many things that come from it (ie. handsprings on vault, cartwheels, etc.) If you get the body shaping down EARLY it makes everything SO MUCH EASIER. If I had to get specific on every event -- Floor -- Handstands (this...

WAG Their casts are getting worse. Help!!

The first drill in this post is great. Put a couple mats on the other side of a low single rail, or a resi on the other side of the low bar. It helps A LOT with fear. It's also great to start when they are little. Cast to — what now? | Swing Big! Spotted swings to handstand on P bars are...

    Coaches Kip help

Without a video I'm not sure if my suggestions will help but here goes. Depending on where kids are (read: how close they are), one of my favorite drills is this. Have kids glide out like they would be doing a normal kip. Then instead of lifting both legs, have them lift only one leg and swing...
