Why gymnastics?
I'm asked this question a lot because I coach other sports.
my DD was born prematurely. 3 weeks in neo natal.
She was a tiny skinny asthmatic child who scared the he'll out of us every time she caught a cold or virus. Many late night emergency visits. Giving her breathing...
That old saying. "Opinions are like aholes, everybody has one."
In dealing with emotional people, Try to stick with specifics. Keep an open mind.
Obviously if they are upset enough to make demands. Find out why.
Coaching can be a trying endeavor.
Sure, everyone welcomes praises.
Nothing makes...
My 11 yr old skipped 6. Won at States, went to Regionals. Another boy lvl 6, is skipping 7 because he is older.
So let the coaches coach.
Couple of notes I would like to share.
First injurys. Whether to chance or increase in skills difficulty. DS had a tough year.
The other concern is...
There are 2 types of weight training.
Anaerobic. BAD 4 KIDS.
by definition anaerobic exercise uses oxygen faster than the body can replenish. So the body uses energy from substrates like carbs, phosphates. Things your body needs to grow.
Simply to build muscle, your tearing it down. things like...
My boy hurt his hand 2 days before Regionals.
Tried 1st event, vault, and didn't come close to looking like his State champion form.
coaches shut him down rest of the meet
However he talked them into doing Rings and finished with AA score of 20.
now he's mad because Dr told him 1 week rest &...
Let's see.
the bad
DS got stress fracture on his hand 2 days before Regionals.
Bleeding from rips so he got rebandaged between events during meet.
Don't let 5yr old kid run across the floor mat while team mate is starting tumbling pass. Yes he did get deducted for stopping.
Judge swears he...
Two camps our boys have attended that I recommend for skills and fun.
WOGA skills camp in Plano, TX and U of M.
Check with a college near you. I'm sure most have a high quality camp.
One subject not touched here is that when we go on vacation the coach still gets paid. My kids took a month in Asia. Worked out at gyms we contacted and asked for an invite. Tumbled on the beach. But it was our vacation not the coaches. So we pay for a month we didn't attend. Small price to keep...
Talk to the coachs/owners of the gyms.
explain your concerns and goals.
Maybe you could come to an agreement on monthly private lessons.
not everyone goes by the CODE, "with us or against us.."
We have a 40 minute drive and are lucky to car pool with a teammate.
Joe, I don't know what your financial situation is like, but it occurred to me that maybe you could travel to a mens coach for privates/camps.
For example; Chicago is 5 hrs drive. find a school willing to train you 1 or 2 lessons..
Would cost $200. maybe you could even work out Video/chat...
U of M runs a great camp. Our boys where there this week. If you hurry they have added a camp week of July 27.
Kids can stay at the dorm and have shuttle from DTW if you need.
Getting their picture with Sam was more inspiring then the 30+hrs of sweat.

Hey Joe
I commend your fortitude and spirit.
A sad fact of MAG is there are few scholarships and competetive team coaches/gyms. That you have achieved up to these skills is remarkable. Unless you can travel to another gym, become an exchange student in E Europe or become self taught.
Consider...
We were in Thailand for the summer.
Visited a couple gyms we contacted before our trip. My son even tried Wu Shu classes.
At one school my dd joined a rhythmic gymnastics class. She has great flexability but these girls where incredible. Not speaking the language well she was greatly intimidated...
