Sounds good but $25 base plus $6 per 500g (how I read it) probably not much different than the current charges from the US?
 
There are several company's that already do this, and they are great for geo blocked items. I am interested to know if AusPost is able to offer a more competitive service in terms of price
I'm not sure as I haven't used any of the services, I do however work in domestic transport and logistics.
If you look at this from a business point of view it wouldn't make sense for them to go below the current market rates as they have an established and recognised brand name which would mean customers will utilise their services over a lesser known competitor even if it is slightly more expensive.
