My poor unlucky girl injured the growth plate in her wrist and thumb at a meet Saturday. Now she is three weeks in a wrist and thumb cast, five weeks until states. Coach, Dr. (who is hand specialist for our local college team), and DD all think she will compete at states. 12 yo L. 8. She had a wrist cast when she was 8 yo for a broken finger and if I remember the wrist strength recovery was brutal. She missed most of last season with a broken foot so I hope the Dr./coach/DD are right, but I don't know... Any good comeback from cast stories or perspective anyone can share?

So sorry to heat that! Wish I had better news for you. DD broke her thumb & was in a cast for 4 weeks. After the cast came off, she did the pt that the dr recommended and slowly regained strength and started doing light/easy tumbling & handstands. It took her at least 2 weeks after it was removed to feel like she could really start using it again. She used kt tape on her wrist for a couple weeks after. Not sure if it really helped but I was fine with a psychological "band-aid". She was training L7 at the time.
Hope your dd can come back faster but I wouldn't rush it if she's not ready and possibly make the injury worse.

ugh, sorry about the injury. L8? I don't see how she would have the strength to tumble and do bars after 3 weeks in a cast and 2 wks of rehab. I wouldn't risk it. I have found over the years that orthos have no real concept of what gymnasts do (yes, even the ones who treat at the college level). Their job is to make sure the bones/muscles and similar are healed. Then it is the PTs job to focus on the rehab. I would recommend consulting with a PT with gymnast experience to get a more realistic timeframe. Not saying it isn't possible. Just sounds unlikely. Even the 3wks in a cast seems short to me. Usually when they do that, the child is then in a brace for another 2-3 weeks.

Sorry, I have to agree with everyone else. My dd missed lv 6 states because of the same injury. Simply was not enough time to get the strength back and did not want to risk repeated injury. Looking back, it took even longer than anticipated for her to be "back to normal".

I'm so sorry about your dd's injury. I have no experience but wanted to offer support. If it turns out as others above have said and she's not ready by states, just remind her of the bigger picture and encourage her to focus her attention forward rather than on what she's missing out on. ((hugs))

I would not compete her if she were my gymnast. Once cast is off, 2 weeks conditioning before we do anything. Then we start H stands etc... That is a normal protocol. 3 weeks meh (level 8 vault is pretty brutal on wrist). 2 weeks not worth the risk. I have learned from similar mistakes. Hope that helps.

Yep. My son had wrist surgery to remove a ganglion cyst in late December. He was only off event work for three weeks and the surgery and recovery were completely uneventful. Nonetheless, he's currently in PT and is still having some pain. If she's casted for more than two weeks, she will likely need PT just to get mobility back, and she will definitely lose a lot of strength. Best to lower expectations now.

Agree with others that timeline for coming back for states sounds not likely or worth it. But with Regionals a full 4 weeks after states, that might be doable, by petition.
Are there any regions that allow petitions for level 8? This would be a great option for this gymnast if she's in one of these regions. It would give her an extra three to four weeks to heal. And maybe much more likely for her to be ready at least four a couple of events.

Yes, pretty sure I know where poster is located and gymnasts can petition level 8/9/10 with a 35 at a meet this season or at last year's Regionals at same level(plus doctor's note).

I agree with the petitioning in to regionals route. Another option is to go the IES (Individual Event Specialist) route. My DD did that one year at L9 due to elbow surgery months earlier. She was cleared to go back to gymnastics weeks before state, but was not ready for the pounding. She did floor and beam using only 1 arm (had to modify her routines) at state and qualified for regionals on those events. It was a good option for her at the time and she was able to be part of the team - and got the coveted regional leo.

Also, if it's one thing I have learned, better to take the time to heal appropriately even if you are being conservative - your DD will have less issues in the long run.

Thank you, everyone, for your responses! I expect petitioning to regionals will be our plan. Does anyone know how this works? Our coach did this for another girl last year so I'm sure she knows the drill but curious. As Wandrewsjr said our region (1) does allow petition to Regionals with a score 1.0 above the qualifying score for States. So I know we need the 35 and a Dr. note which she has/can get. Does everyone who provides this get accepted into Regionals? That would be really cool as she would then only miss one meet and states. Or could she go to States and do some one handed routines and still petition to Regionals? I know we should be more patient, but this poor girl has missed A LOT of meets and she lives to compete.

Yes, as long as gymnast has acheived the 35 and dr note, it's always approved. She could compete at states on less than 4 events and still petition.

That's interesting - Region 8 can only petition in 9/10. No petitions are accepted in 6/7/8.

Good luck! Wrists and hands are involved in like every aspect of this sport!

R8 does a percentage basis for qualifying to regionals at 6/7/8. I believe they are now doing it for xcel as well.

of course, R8 also has a minimum 35 to qualify for regionals for 9/10, 9.3 for a specialist and a 36 to petition in... So we are just odd all around :p

Yes, Regions get to run the qualifying process for regional championship meets for levels that have no meet above them(so everything but 9/10) however they want. In Region 1 all Regionals are just a 34 qualifying score from States(Xcel is different). All the Regional meets 6, 7, 8 and 9/10 are each their own full 3 day meets with around 550-650 kids, though 6 & 7 and 8 & 9/10 are held in the same location side by side. I assume those Regions that only allow a percentage of each level to qualifying keep their meets a little smaller?

Funny how all of the states are different, are they different within region as well? For example in NY (R6), for lv 7 this year. The top 7 scores make it to "super 7" team for regionals and then the next 46 after that qualify for All Star team. Last year the lowest score to qualify was 36.95 (my dd's teammate). For lv 8 this year, the top 7 make super 7 and the next 54 all star team. As of right now there are 328 gymnasts registered for lv 7 states and 272 for lv 8. Percentages.

My DD will be petitioning to Region 1 level 8 regionals as well! Fractured radius 1/27. Luckily competed two early meets and scored high 36. Hopefully out of her cast this week and off to PT. We have to submit doctors note (specifically with dr signature/medical license number/release to activity date) along with proof of scores. As i hear it that as long as your have proper documentation it will be accepted! Here’s hoping our dds are healed enough by April to do an event or two!!
