Coaches what level do YOU think coaches should start weighing, or talking about weight...

never. ever.... ever. If I ever saw a coach pull out a scale in my gym, they would be fired on the spot. If I ever heard a coach tell a kid they needed to lose weight, they'd be fired on the spot. period. end of story. never.

    Coaches National Congress

Thank you so much for your kind words, CreateMagic. :) I'm so glad you liked my lectures. I really got alot out of Jeff Robinson's lectures on coaching boys. He's one of my heroes, and I always learn a ton when I get the chance to hear him speak. Alison Arnold was awesome, as always...

    bridges

Before I say anything else, let me say this..I do not EVER recommend a child do gymnastics at home without the supervision of a coach...ever. So, I would tell you to discourage your daughter from doing any gymnastics at home. Stretching can be good, regular outside play is also good because it...

    Seat Drops

A couple of drills I use.. To keep their legs together, I have them hold "magic dimes" made out of craft foam between their knees. I gently bounce them while they hold the dimes. When they drop the dimes, it's my turn to hold my dime. Another drill I use..if they bend their knees, making...

    My daughter starts tonight!

There are three purposes to a good warm-up. 1) Increase heart rate 2) Engorge muscles with blood 3) Put muscles and joints through appropriate range of motion for the activities. Stretching is great at any age, as long as it's done correctly. For preschoolers, the suggested hold time is no...

Bridges are bad, but are pull ups?

There are no recommendations against pull-ups in preschool that I know of. They are pretty much viewed to be good drills for strengthening the arms at just about any age. The concern regarding bridging has to do with putting excessive pressure on the lower back in an over-arched position...

    Headstands & other preschool skills

Phew..are you ready for a novel? Please understand, I am not a doctor, so I cannot make medical decisions. All I can tell you is what the current standards are, why they exist and how they apply to preschool gymnastics based on the information that's out there. I realize that there are gyms...

    bridges

Just a quick note and correction to spelling. I can never spell the word without looking it up..I should have looked it up before I posted. The condition is spelled Spondylolysis for anyone looking it up. Sorry for my brain spasm there...hope that helps anyone looking for more information.

    Headstands & other preschool skills

I cannot in good conscience tell you that it's okay for her to bridge at all. I don't allow any child under age 5 to bridge in my gym. Nor do I EVER recommend that a kid do gymnastics at home without the supervision of a coach. My coaches are very particular about it as well. I'm not...

    Headstands & other preschool skills

Not a problem. I'm not easily offended. I have been one of the KAT instructors for alot of years and I have had to explain this particular issue many many times. ..and yes, I do believe that some kids are more prone to the condition than others largely due to lack of flexibility. From my...
