I think what we're seeing from the OP's post is one state's very rigorous and rigid attempt to increase physical activity in young people. I don't think it's a successful approach and it's definitely not like that across the US. When I was a kid, we had PE every day in primary school. Activities...
My husband built my daughter a carpeted floor beam when she was in (old) level 3. She only did dance on it, never any skills. She's retired from gym now, but we can't seem to part with it because it's now the cat's favorite scratching post. It's been the best $20 scratching post for the past 10...
Given her age and the amount being asked of her, I would seriously advise my child to skip some stuff and go with the lower grade. I know that a lot of gymnasts value doing well in school, but worrying about gpa in 6th grade, to the point of pain and exhaustion, seems to be a little much. In all...
The flip side with spotting is that some girls learn to rely on it to the point that they won't do the skill without a spot, even after many months and years. I watched it happen to several girls in our gym. They clearly had the skill, but absolutely would not do it without a coach touching...
I absolutely agree that it's better to teach our kids how to interact with SM rather than ban it outright, once they hit the appropriate age. I think this is one area where parents disagree. What is the appropriate age. Is it 13? Is it 10? That is a parent specific decision.
My kids had...
And this is one of the aspects that really disturbs me. All these little kids making these young girls celebrities. They create fan sites and beg for the little girls to follow them or talk to them. But, in most cases, it's not the seven year old little girl who is actually running the account...
There are other posts on CB about the exact issue your DD is facing. If I remember correctly, one girl could only do a 1.5 twist even when she was just trying to do a full. I think another kept twisting when trying to do a layout, just like your DD. Maybe you could do some searching to see if...
I agree with MeetDirector.
Definitely don't make any decisions while you are mad. That usually doesn't turn out well.
Fear is a strange thing. It can come and go throughout her career or she may get over it and never have another issue. It may be vestibular or not. Others with more experience...
@AgingHippie-
Does your gym require girls to compete full years at both level 5 & 6? These are basically the same level, so many gyms don't compete both. However, many gyms do, which ultimately adds a year to the journey.
Either way, she will be fine. It is a long road to college...
Our region (2) has event specialists at level 7, but you can only go as far as state. No regionals for level 7. Typically, the declaration date for event specialists is mid-February.
I'm speaking from region 2, but this is how that would happen in our state/region.
Girl declares as an event specialist by a certain date (it's usually mid-February here). In our state, you can compete up to 2 events as a specialist. Achieve minimum qualifying score on each event to get to...
Tough love isn't personal. Tough love isn't degrading. Tough love doesn't make a kid feel worthless. A coach who doesn't understand the difference isn't worth a lot in my book.
Luckily, yes I could go that route if needed. Fortunately, the cheer coach was very receptive when I spoke to her today and expressed my concerns. She agreed that my DD would not have to wear the weights and she was very interested in hearing about our previous experiences and learnings. My...
So, I just got a message from my DD's cheer coach (she retired from gymnastics last year and went to the dark side - lol) requesting that we purchase ankle weights for work on jumps and tumbling. Looks like I am back to fighting this battle...
