Pac man verses boulder to help learn back handsprings??

We use a pac-man for flics but we never have them start 'sitting' in the cut-out, for the reasons mentioned above. Instead we start them standing in a question mark shape (dish with bent legs) which ideally is how they would propel from a round off. This teaches the jump backwards, as well as...

    Coaches Back hip circle undershoots

Agree with @Jard.the.gymnast, we always teach a double back hip circle first. Once they are confident with that and they can do it nice and fast with good form, we move onto placing a wedge mat in front of the bar that they undershoot over (teaches them to get their hips up). Then it's lots and...

WAG Who will replace Miss Val?

You make a point. In saying that, when Miss Val first started coaching the UCLA gymnastics team in 1983, she had absolutely no gymnastics experience. She wasn't a gymnast, and had never been coached by a gymnast or gymnastics coach. Either way, I'm sure they'll pick the right person/people :)

WAG I think i might be done

A break is not always a bad thing... and it’s not always permanent. Listen to your body, even if you think it’s physiological: there’s always a reason if your body is trying to tell you something, even if that reason is in your head or you don’t quite know what it is. Hope you find your drive...

    Full Turn Direction

Yup, thats a dance true, where you turn towards your leg in passé. It's an easy fix, visualise the turn you want, with the correct direction (i.e turning towards the leg on the ground by leading with your shoulders), after practicing it for a while, it will become second nature :)

    WAG Beam consistency

There's a big difference between having a skill ready to compete, and having a skill comfortably nailed. For example, at the beginning of the season, a new level 4 may be struggling with her cartwheel, at her first few meets and practices she may be only sticking 60% on the high beam, but that...

    WAG YouTube / Instagram stars

Yes agreed, Sydney Morris is really good, and has become especially skilled after her move to First State, be mindful a lot of the time the talented 7 and 8 year-olds on Instagram and YouTube are unfortunately not paced correctly and end up getting injured or burn out, because to them it can...

    WAG More floor music help

Maybe they might be a bit more comfortable expressing themselves and putting personality into the routine if the music is a soundtrack piece/ theme from their favourite tv show or movie? It might help them get a bit more comfortable with performing because they will be able to 'get into...

    Parents Backyard Trampoline

Here in NZ, we love Springfree trampolines, not sure how popular they are elsewhere. My advice, take it with a grain of salt, would be to make sure the trampoline has a net on the inside of the springs, you see way too many injuries where the net is on the outside, and kids get a limb stuck in...

    WAG Injury

Oh my goodness, thats quite something. I am just coming off tearing my deltoid ligament and damage to my ATFL and CFL, so far it has been seven weeks and still going, obviously each case is different but you can probably expect full recovery to take around 4-6 months or so :( Injuries suck, but...

WAG Vault: Round Off (Half On) Hands

We have always been taught "T" hands, like a round off on the floor, only have the hand that is normally straight turn out slightly (i.e. left hand for a lefty, right hand for a righty) so you end up as close as you can to a 1/2 rotation before hitting the table. However, it all depends on the...

    Parents What to expect

Can't really help you with scores as scoring is different in NZ (we score out of 15.000 and our smallest deduction is 0.003) but good luck! First meets always bring nerves but are lots of fun! :)
