    Thoughts on Challenge Cup

Jimjac - agree about a physio or similar...I have never heard of any club around here that has had one visit or work closely with a club on injury prevention or conditioning. Would be good though! I also think it would be good to allow specialisation at the lower level. Many girls I know quit...

Jimjac I agree with so much of what you are saying!

    Thoughts on Challenge Cup

As I said, I'm definitely no expert, so I couldn't possibly say I think any of the skills are unnecessary as I simply don't know enough to make that judgement, but one of the skills I hardly ever see on TV (at least it's not mandatory anyway), and I think she will struggle with this year, is the...

    Thoughts on Challenge Cup

Jenny - no I certainly didn't mean it to sound 'mean', sorry if it came across that way. Maybe it's coming from a different sport, but in my sport there was a national ranking list going all the way down to 1000th position plus, so you could set targets for yourself that way. For example...

    Thoughts on Challenge Cup

Learning Parent GB - yes, the challenge cup is a huge achievement in itself, and my daughter and we would definitely see it as such. But I suppose what I'm saying is that at such a young age, I feel like she should still be thinking that if she works hard and everything falls into place, she...

    Thoughts on Challenge Cup

This really shows up how it is virtually impossible to qualify for the British via the Challenge Cup. Only one gymnast in two of the age groups, in the entire country, and only five in the other, managed to qualify. It really makes it not a viable route. I find it really disappointing and...

    Training hours

Yes I think the system is different, but it was really about how many hours training needed to get the skills, which would be the same (I think?) in both. Thank you!

    Training hours

Thank you everyone! That was actually really helpful. I think the UK and the US have similar issues by the sounds of it. Everyone agrees higher hours should come later but no one does it... It would maybe mean less burn out though. And the national squads are full of the 25-30 hours per week...

    Training hours

Sorry, I know variations of this have been posted a lot, but I haven't exactly seen the answer to this: What are the minimum hours of training you have seen/know about for someone to qualify as elite? And at what age do you need to start doing those hours? How many hours are necessary at...

    Testing

Personally I would tell mine, but I think it depends on the child.

    Testing

I'm also from the UK, and agree with Aussie coach that it's tough to be moved back to rec after a taste of squad, and I don't like it either, but most clubs here have that system. Also agree with the fact that they will already know what she can do in training, so one bad test day won't change...

    Beam questions

Thanks all for your replies! I caved in the end and asked the coach for her - apparently in England a fall is 1 mark, but a pause in the connection is only 0.5. She took the pause as she really wanted a stuck routine but ended up coming off on her full spin instead :( ! She did manage to ask...

    Kara Eaker's beam at Worlds

I've seen a few comments on this on Twitter, but excuse my ignorance, what's wrong with her ring positions? (I'm obviously not a gymnast/coach!)

    Beam questions

Thanks all! I can see both sides. I did a different sport, and always had a few options of how I would deal with things that came up during the competition, so I personally do prefer that approach. Plus my daughter always asks 'what do I do if this happens' and it seems to help with her...

    Beam questions

Sorry, I meant she finds asking the coach difficult (she's still only 8 and I'm hoping she'll get more confident with age!) The series she is happy working on, lands it pretty much every time, but only sticks it maybe 50%? But when it goes wrong it's nearly always the bwo that makes it go wrong...

    Beam questions

Thank you! I'm trying to convince her to ask her coach but she still finds it really difficult! And I'm sure the coach would rather I didn't interfere!

    Beam questions

Hi all, just wondered if you could help me with a couple of questions as I don't want to become 'that parent' and keep asking the coach! I am in the UK if that's relevant. 1. The routine requirement includes a bwo bhs connection. If my daughter feels a little off balance during/after the bwo...

    An unfair challenge?

Congratulations to your daughter! That would be a dream for my daughter too, who also has a year end birthday, so fingers crossed for some point in the future I guess. I wish they did give out medals in age groups at least! As for your other question, no I can't think of any other sports with a...

    An unfair challenge?

Our region is not like that. I'm pretty sure my daughter would have medalled in her age group, which would have been a much-needed confidence boost, but they only read out the top five in all age groups, so it was all the older ones instead. We know a couple of the older medallists, and what...
