Parents Question about pursuing athletic scholarship

For my dd, there’s a few things at play. She is likely to be lucky enough to have a choice. She’s talking to Ivies, liberal arts colleges, navy (!) and a few others. Firstly is her sporting goals. She intends to continue competing elite, aiming at international level. The choice of...

Parents Pros & Cons of the "Elite Path"

    Parents Sudafed and practice

Personally I try not to medicate, including painkillers, for training. If you mask symptoms with drugs they could end up doing things the body isn’t well enough for. I’d let her go, and if being congested means she feels she has to take it easy, so be it. Better than feeling ok and trying...

WAG The Ivies - financial part

Ha totally. Just to share our experience, the Ivy wasn’t on dd’s list of schools at all. She is clever, but not extremely clever, if you know what I mean. She’s national standard and thought an Ivy might swing toward academics, and be a lot of pressure school work and athletics, and she still...

WAG The Ivies - financial part

Did that school send you the financial aid information? The school interested in DD sent it all over and explained the difference between ivy and non ivy funding/scholarships before they took it further. They sent some tables and info I can’t find on the website.

WAG The Ivies - financial part

We are going through it at the minute. My understanding is it’s based on financial need- as in you put in your income and there is a sliding scale- the less you earn the less you contibute, to about 50 or 60k where all tuition fees and accomodation are paid for. You are also expected to...

Parents Anyone have kids that have moved from gymnastics to cheer?

Mine has. She is a “comfort zone” athlete and once she got to a certain point where the gymnastics skills got scary it got difficult to learn new stuff. Which was fine, but of course found herself steadily moving down from the elite groups, to the club squad, and ended up with younger kids and...

    Coach Recruitment Overseas

Contact the NGB- for example British Gymnastics and ask them to put ad on their website and social media. There’s also the gym blogs, and facebook pages, sit down and send a load of messages to clubs as well. basically social media will be key. Or are you looking to recruit locally?

Bad News For The 2021 Tokyo Olympics

Yes, you’re right, i was thinking of the AZ vaccine which is 4-12 weeks between doses. Here they generally are nearer the 12 weeks because of supply and logistics.

Bad News For The 2021 Tokyo Olympics

I’d be interested in @aussiecoach point of view here- i’ve just read on another thread Aus isn't rolling out a vaccination programme yet as they have very few cases and the rates are low. How will Australia manage? Unvaccinated with no previous exposure and they will be taking an enormous...

Bad News For The 2021 Tokyo Olympics

To add- i am also worried about the ethics of holding the games. especially with sports like gymnastics, where athletes are very young, often under 18. Do they really have the choice not to go if their country decides to participate? Especially with funding tied to medals, that could be them...

Bad News For The 2021 Tokyo Olympics

I agree it should be cancelled. The risk to the athletes is too high, there’s a big chance Covid will just rip through that many people in proximity, and even though the % is small, it still means some may be left with career ending lung damage, or even die. i don’t think we have enough to time...

    Parents Possible switch to cheer

yes, i explained in my first post on this thread. We were going to keep it up, but the gym wouldn’t let her drop to a 2 or 3x a week squad, and would only offer an elite place...

    Parents Possible switch to cheer

So funny- I’m in the UK and it’s completely different. Much more of a “team” feeling and the parents have a group chat and help each other out a lot. Coaches are friendlier and there’s more transparency on what you need to be in which team and why a kids isn’t. Money is about half of what gym...

    2021 Goals

I think my goals for dd is to hope she doesn’t end up quitting. 5 weeks training since last March in the year she turns senior is going to be a tough one to come back from, especially as the seniors, and a couple of selected juniors, are permitted to train. to be fair she is very focussed on...

    Parents Possible switch to cheer

Mine switched to cheer this year. She is a very talented gymnast but never had that drive to get new skills and move up. She is more about the team and the social aspect. so cheer has worked really well for her. Practice is only 3x a week, so once lockdown is over she can come to kids...

    So what’s happening?

I’ve just looked up the government advice on who is allowed to train- For the purposes of this guidance the definition of an ‘elite athlete’ means a person who is: an individual who derives a living from competing in a sport a senior representative nominated by a relevant sporting body a...

    So what’s happening?

As far as I know all closing. We’ve had notification today the centre will be shut down and back on zoom for the next month. dd has trained about 6 weeks in total since March, those weeks on a modified schedule.

    WAG Master's age group

when did they bring an upper limit in? Never used to be one. can you imaging if they brought that rule in for WAG? No chuso, no becky downie... masters gym in the UK is quite widespread. As @bogwoppit said, uni’s often compete novice as up to advanced (no ncaa of course). Most bigger gyms...

    Parents Leotard Companies

Favourite here is cristian moreau. Not cheap, but the quality is far above any others. They are also longer in the body so if your gymnast is long torso but narrow they fit better than other brands. Because they wear very well i buy second hand, and ours have lasted a further 3 gymnasts with...
