WAG Advice for Young Level 4

Iwannacoach, how did you handle the anxiety issues? My daughter has been deathly afraid of flushing toilets and loud noises much of her life. I guess I was hoping she was growing out of it, but I guess it is a one step forward and two steps back kind of thing. My younger daughter, who was...

WAG Advice for Young Level 4

yes, Moxiegirl83, she feels conspicuous being so small in the big gym, but she's gotten used to it over the summer. I was taken by surprise at her sudden refusal to walk through the door. She says she doesn't feel confident. Some of the older girls are not very friendly. It's just a...

WAG Advice for Young Level 4

Iwannacoach..... very true. DD likes predictability and sameness. In fact she thrives on it. She was adopted from China at age 2 and I think some of her anxiety behaviors stem from her early experiences. Just to be clear. This is not a new schedule, nor is it a new situation. She...

WAG Advice for Young Level 4

Thank you Gymboymom, I had already decided to be unemotional and not get involved in her struggle to walk into the gym. I will take your tip and be boring too. Four hours three times a week has been the schedule all summer. I wish it was three hours but I realize the program is designed...

Thank you for your thoughts on anxiety and sharing your dd's experience. Anxiety is such a huge and invisible problem! Every gym needs a psychologist on staff! :)

    WAG Round-off BHS !!!!

That is a huge skill worth celebrating! I videoed my dd getting a slight spot on her BHS, and she has a great RO BHS with the boulder under her. I think if they secrety moved it out of the way, she could do it. (silly mom joking) Congratulations to your gymnast!

WAG Advice for Young Level 4

Thank you all for such consideration and awesome answers. Great Minds Think Alike! I will address some of the points you made. We always arrive early because my younger daughter goes in at 3:30 with no hesitation. Older daughter starts at 4pm. So being early is already being done. Our...

WAG Advice for Young Level 4

My daughter has been at the same gym since preschool. She had a year of Pre Team and loved it. She started training on the Level 4 team at the start of summer. So for ten or 12 weeks now, she has had the new schedule. Her problem is not the workout. She is tough and strong. The problem...

WAG What Makes Your Gym Great, or Not

Algymmom, I love this painting. Such a poignant moment. I'm amazed at how many different gym programs there are.

    Question...any advice is appreciated!

Our gym has had a couple of preteam groups that they've decided not to train for USAG and they've moved them to prep opt/Excel instead of Level 3/4. I don't think it's too much to inquire about what the plan is for your child. Maybe they haven't thought about and by asking they will give it...

WAG What Makes Your Gym Great, or Not

I love the practice of meeting with gymnasts and their parents, to set goals and go over things. I think that sort of honest communication could prevent so much of the speculation and rumor mill stuff that goes on. At some gyms parents are just expected to pay and keep quiet, and ideally not...

What type of school does your gymnast attend???

We've been homeschooling for 15 years. It's a way of life, not a way to study. When people start talking about socialization, I remind them that no one would send their puppy to be behavior training in a situation where there were 30 puppies to one trainer. Why is it a good idea for...

WAG What Makes Your Gym Great, or Not

I'm interested in the things that make parents and gymnasts feel really good about their gym. What is the difference between a gym/coach that makes you want to shout from the rooftops rather than slink home and wonder if you are in an unhealthy place. For me, as a parent who has had five...

Shin splints-doctor or tough it out?

I read somewhere that shin splints are actually tiny fractures in the bone. That could explain them taking so long to heal. I think you might try a leg wrap if you are medically cleared and see if that helps.

5yo Attention and Boredom in Gym

wandrewsjr, you bring up an interesting dilemma, something that has been on my mind more than once. I'm keeping my eyes open and my options open. Like most people, we have other things going on in our family, including a very ill 17yo who is getting ready to start serious treatments. We...

5yo Attention and Boredom in Gym

Dunno, I was not trying to stereotype anyone in your profession. I've known many awesome coaches. I would not want to paint with a broad stroke, anymore than I like it being done to my kids. But mine isn't the only experience with children being chosen or set aside at a very young age...

What it takes to be in the TOPS A Team and B Team

TOPS seems like a good way for lesser known gyms to get noticed and hopefully respected by the national gymnastics people. It's a political tool for gyms. WOGA doesn't have to participate in TOPS because they already have a great reputation.

5yo Attention and Boredom in Gym

Thanks. I'm sorry to know this happens to others, but also comforted to know I'm not alone. I am considering my options. Will keep you posted if we make any changes. It seems that American coaches and owners are more dedicated to gymnastics being about the children, while coaches from other...

5yo Attention and Boredom in Gym

I hope I"m doing this right..... I wanted to add a followup to my post about advocating for my daughter to be on the team track. I have two girls in gymnastics. The older one started Level 4 training this summer. This is about my 5yo who I requested be allowed to try the team track training...
