Parents I wish the girls were nicer

Middle school girls really are often "mean"...esp if jealous or threatened. When DD moved from her first gym, which was small and absolutely tolerated NO mean girl attitudes in the younger girls (I heard there were issues there too with older ones, but DD was young...) to one that was more...

    Parents Sadness approaching "retirement"

I think it will go fine... DS the elder is slowly transitioning to being done. He'd like to stay officially in gym but not compete again next year, and can only attend a couple days a week and even then if asked to perform or rehearse at the last minute always chooses music now, whereas at...

    Parents Am I overreacting?

this - a simple answer, no drama, no hurt feelings. Really, doing it in front of those not included is just bad "adulting"

    Parents Mama bear vent

Sounds like they really did screw up - but also may be not sure how to best work with your DD. growth and puberty are very hard for many girls in gym - and its not usually a quick fix. But coaching relationship and confidence make a huge difference while they are struggling. My kids have...

Parents Thoughts on this? 8th grader committing to UCLA??

And unfortunately these kids haven't even started to try to balance high level gymnastics with high school academics - which is easier than balancing it with college academics. Test scores (on early testing) are one thing - but actually being able to manage time - that is a totally different...

Parents Question for parents of high level gymnasts

my kids were homeschooled until 8th-9th grade. DD started team at age 7 (pre-team at 5) - training 12 hours a week - was up to 20 hours (level 7) by age 10. Did well with her schoolwork, did ballet 2 years, played violin in local youth orchestra, rode horses, etc....homeschooling really helped...

    WAG Beam backhandspring vent

I'm very proud of her deciding she liked gymnastics enough to go back at a new gym, new coaches and the "old age" of 14 - I'm proud of her trying to find a way to do the thing she enjoys and feels good doing without the pressure to be a "4 year level 10" and all that...I'm proud of her calling...

    WAG Beam backhandspring vent

nothing helps but patience from parents and coach - and if possible athlete. DD was doing BHS-BHS series at age 9...then developed fears/vestibular stuff. struggled with it 2 years at L7 (with near perfect beam routines and 9.5+ scores - but absolute panic every meet). Then new gym/new coach...

Parents Wanting to branch out or nearing the end of gymnastics and doesn't realize it?

Perhaps a perspective - although men's gym is a bit different. My older boy always was a music first, gym second kid. Each year we thought would be his last at gym - until at age 13 he suddenly got strong and moved from level 5 to level 7 and then 8 the next year. (he started late at age...

Parents Any experience with balance and an ear infection?

can take weeks for fluid to completely resolve...unfortunately not much but time really helps... kids with recurrent ear infections can develop balance issues - always wondered if DD vestibular stuff was trigger by her recurrent (and severe - as in hospital stay because of bone involvement) ear...

WAG The next big skills (beyond compulsaries)

makes sense - I don't think she had a very powerful block at L7 - vault was her lowest scoring event with low 9s. Shes crazy strong now, but we'll see what happens - she did flip at the lower setting and land them on a mat in the pit...but there's a big difference from that and a safe vault...

WAG The next big skills (beyond compulsaries)

Thanks - I think that makes sense to me - and she did make it to a 3 before quitting but only doing FHS - they pretty much didn't let her work even drills for flipping until then, and she became a coaches nightmare with all her fears, etc so....

WAG Numbers of L9 and 10s moving from Regionals to Nationals.....something seems crazy!

totally agree - and to be clear, I have no horse in this race - my L10 boy is quitting and my DD was out for 3 years so won't be heading to nationals - my youngest boy is a slow and steady kiddo...and you are absolutely right. DD has friends who are hitting L9 and L10 nationals now with less...

WAG The next big skills (beyond compulsaries)

quick question then - my kiddo was flipping yurchenkos into the pit on settings of 2 at her first gym (she's very short) - transferred gyms when they closed, and had to work only FHS until she could do them on 3 and 4....quit for 2 years. Now fully grown and strong, but still 4'9". training...

WAG Numbers of L9 and 10s moving from Regionals to Nationals.....something seems crazy!

sounds good numbers-wise, but this would mean that kids in region 2 would possibly need to travel for many more meets in order to actually see their competition - and I'd bet that Colorado and Washington would contribute 75% of the national qualifiers due to their coaching depth...kids from...

WAG Numbers of L9 and 10s moving from Regionals to Nationals.....something seems crazy!

THIS....in spades. However, for "average kids" smaller regions make for happier gymnasts I sometime think as they aren't left behind or never allowed to compete at all. But having very few experienced coaches, no TOPS or ELITE or FUTURE stars options, few gyms to move to if you struggle...

    MAG Private lessons

first gym DD trained at had privates occ. If coach felt they would be helpful she would suggest and usually offer free or 2 for the price of one. These helped DD when she was working on moving up midseason or stuck on a skill. She did them when she was the only L5 moving up to L6 (old system)...

definitely not! I hear they do pass, though....

Parents For those with gymnasts who DON'T look forward to summer training....

summer was always my DD favorite - until she moved to a team where they were set with deadlines and placed in specific groups that were only allowed to uptrain certain skills (ie, if you weren't vaulting on 3 or higher you couldn't do chenko drills, despite the fact that she had flipped her...

Parents Moving, looking for gym in Portland

Comparatively little xcel in Oregon, BTW...and wide variety of JO programs. Its region 2, so due to low population density and fewer deep coaching staffs, overall less competitive than other regions, but some very well trained kids come out of here... Portland has quite a few teams, mostly on...
