    WAG Help

Ask about cleaning the gym to pay for tuition? That's been done a fair bit. Or doing office admin if you are computer-savvy? How old is your daughter? Could she help out by getting a part-time job delivering newspapers?

    MAG Ways to improve flexibility

I agree with physio and massage therapy. Physio gives them a set of specific stretches aimed at their needs (as opposed to the one-size-fits-all stretching they all do at gym). Massage therapy helps too. The main issue (barring structural issues, which is why I say physio first and possibly a...

That sounds amazing! We love college meets but they are rarely close enough to attend. It sounds worth a plane ride!

Congratulations!! You're a very supportive mom and your boys are lucky to have you!

MAG Question regarding coaching...style, I guess?

Our MAG program is easy about uniforms, too. It's funny how much less stock MAG puts in appearance than WAG, overall.

MAG Anyone heard of girls competing against boys?

My son's doctor said that low body fat and excessive exercise does not effect testosterone, which means puberty is not delayed for male athletes. For female athletes, progesterone is effected by low body fat and excessive exercise, so puberty can be delayed. My son is a ways off of puberty, but...

MAG Anyone heard of girls competing against boys?

MAG and WAG are just so different. Men's and women's basketball, or ice hockey, or curling, or whatever, same sport, same apparatus, same rules, etc. Maybe softball/baseball have differences, I don't know much about that, but can't women still play hardball and men softball? I feel that if you...

MAG Anyone heard of girls competing against boys?

I've seen both, but unfortunately only briefly (as in, I don't think the boy I saw in WAG or the girl in MAG stuck it out past one season). The boy in WAG wore a men's uniform and the girl in MAG wore a women's uniform. I think it's a fantastic idea. I understand the limitations, physically...

    MAG Where’s the line?

I agree with Hollowarchkick. I don't mind discipline or even loss of temper for misbehavior. I understand that! I draw my own line at any discipline, humiliation, or meanness around a loss of skill or inability to gain a skill. That's offside to me. My son's coach is a yeller but only around...

MAG What does your gym do (discipline concerns)

I have seen exactly what you describe with our boys team. They were a menace to the gym for a while there and the other coaches were complaining about the misbehavior. My own boy has been a problem as well. While I believe in positive coaching and athlete engagement, I do have to give my...

MAG When an athlete has a bad attitude

My son's coach asked a while back to meet with him, me, and the coach to discuss my son's attitude. It turned out he was afraid of a skill and that's why he was refusing to do the routine or practice that skill. The coach has a very "my way of the highway" attitude usually, but hearing my son's...

    MAG Home mushroom question

When my son was 7, he loved it. By 9, he was using it to sit on when he played video games. We still have it mainly because it is furniture now; if you lived closer I'd give you a very good deal!

MAG The life span of grips?

I just realized, because of this post, that my son just competed his third season in the same pair of ring and high bar grips. Which is amazing mostly because they have been lost and found over and over again  He started on the smallest pair and had room to grow, but they've...

WAG Please help.....need coaches and experienced higher level gym parents to advise on this:(

I have asked myself this question, too. Can you imagine a teacher screaming at kids? Or only pointing out errors? Ie., instead of "90/100", you get a paper with "10 mistakes :(" on the top. If it isn't acceptable in school, it shouldn't be acceptable in the gym.

    MAG Coordination

I love Tumbellina's posts because they remind parents that many of the basic things we watch the kids do, we couldn't do ourselves! I like to do a drop in once a year or so and try a muscle up.....I hang there pedaling my legs in the air and realize that this stuff takes a crazy amount of work...

    MAG Private lessons

I agree with 3riverselite. If kids with private lessons were usually more successful than kids with no private lessons, they would be far more common. Private lessons do not necessarily equal more success. In fact, in our area anyway, the most successful kids (I speak only for MAG) have zero...

    MAG Private lessons

My son's coach is very good at working to each boy's level. I can see how someone might need private lessons if the coach isn't able to multitask as well (takes years of experience I think). The boys' groups can range in age and ability much more than the girls. Some days there is a 15-year and...

    MAG Private lessons

No privates here either. Not sure if the girls' program does them. If they do, I've never seen it. I don't think it's a thing at our gym :) (Which is good because the regular program is expensive enough!)
