Yes! She does have a video that the coach took of her when she first got it in the summer so maybe she should watch that a few times lol. One big thing with her is that she doesn't do the mental processing needed to internalize/apply verbal corrections. When/if she's really intentional about...
Each coach has a different theory -- they're probably all right! :) One says it's pure timing -- something about when her legs are in front of the bar out of her kip; another says she doesn't lean far enough over the bar out of her kip; another says her heel drive isn't strong enough; another...
My kid competed L7 last year w/o CHS or giants. We just looked away when her bars score posted . She’s repeating L7 this year... she Finally got both skills this summer and then a week later was sidelined with a back injury for 8 wks and is now slowly trying to get back to where she was. She...
I don't really know - it seems like they mostly rely on verbal but at meets I see a lot of times after vault or something they'll raise their arms and hunch their shoulders slightly as a reminder of shape, I guess, but who knows if DD is even watching haha. I'm sure they try more things than I'm...
I like the idea of having to repeat the corrections back -- and probably also to somehow show what the correction will look like (like showing what open shoulders look like). And yeah, you'd think the coaches would naturally work to find other ways to give the corrections if they see a girl not...
Letting the girls ask a teammate to video is a great idea -- that way it doesn't have to take away from whatever else the coach is doing. I like that. Maybe I'll suggest to DD that she ask her coaches if they'd permit this.
Yes-- great ideas. Thank you! Giving DD a specific criterion such as getting the same correction x times in a row might help her feel more confident about knowing when it's time to speak up (vs. feeling like she has to make a judgment call each time or whatever).
Her coaches are def. mostly...
Wow, this is awesome. Love how driven and focused she is, and really love how her coach helps her stay accountable. Having something manageable like 2 per apparatus is a really good idea.
I like the video idea too, and her coaches do that once in a while but very rarely. There are a lot of...
What has worked for kids who seem to have a hard time processing/applying corrections? My DD, 12, L7, has I think always relied on her body’s ability to just “do stuff” and has never really had to learn to think through and make corrections. She got by without them (I mean obv not all of them)...
Thanks, all! Glad to know that height of gymnast and bar setting don't go hand-in-hand. I totally get that a coach wouldn't want to (and shouldn't have to) change bar settings all the time. And I do suspect that part of it is a strength issue (or maybe a knowing-how-to-harness-the-strength...
DD just hit 5 feet and is the tallest on her team (L7) by at least 4 inches. She’s been struggling on bars (can’t seem to get straight legs on glide before kip) and keeps saying it’s because the bar setting is too low but is afraid to ask coach abt it. Might she be right or is it something in...
It's not abnormal, but that doesn't make it okay. If it's an empty threat, as it has been in our experience, it's a terrible idea. If it's a real possibility, then a sit-down convo needs to happen instead of it being threatened during practice. Yuck.
Thanks everyone -- this will help with DD's confidence, I think. She basically was like "I can't do a cast HS because I can't do a press" -- self-fulfilling prophecy, anyone?
I guess I just assumed a straddle was easier than non-straddle and a progression toward the latter. No? Still, she can't do a non-straddle cast handstand either. She has trouble leaning over and then opening her shoulders at the right time to get her casts high enough.
