Congratulations! We have been homeschooling since kindergarten - also for non-gymnastics reasons. As a former classroom teacher, I can honestly tell you that homeschooling does not necessarily mean closing doors - it means others are opening. Homeschooling isn't an inferior style of education...
I second massage (assuming ther is nothing serious going on). So many of my daughter's aches and pains are related to muscle tightness (15-year-old L10). Once she began weekly massage, she was able to keep much of this under control.
I second everything @NutterButter and @gymmutti said. Obviously get your doctor's approval, but going to the gym (even if it is just for an hour or two a day to do some super light conditioning and upper body training) is important for the mental aspect of coming back from an injury like this...
SO glad to hear this, Traci! We are in a similar situation - DD got cleared a couple months ago to slowly ease back into things after her back issue. Building back that core/back strength is taking a lot of time (dang brace!), but it is happening and she is healed. Hang in there - those...
DD went back for her 4-week follow up last week after going in the hard brace - had zero pain for the first 3 weeks, but for some reason she has been having pain for the last 10 days just standing/sitting and now even during PT. Have any of you had this happen in a back brace? This is so...
Wow - that is wonderful that she has had no back issues for 2 years! DD is 4 weeks into this and is wearing a brace. She went to zero pain almost immediately and stayed there for 3 weeks, but something flared up a week ago despite the fact that she has been doing next to nothing and is in her...
Traci, my DD is going through the same thing right now in the same spot, though hers is not technically fractured yet. She tried the "modify and don't do anything that aggravates it" route for a couple weeks with a soft brace, but it just wasn't working - there's only so much you can modify as...
Kit Kat, thank you so much for sharing! It was such a pleasure to watch. Alex looks wonderful - amazing beam mount and triple series! I'd never know she was "struggling" with bars, either. FWIW, my DD hates the BHS BLO BLO, too...convinced her coach to let her wait until next year to compete...
Kit Kat, you are awesome! I have been following these conversations because we are close to this I think (hope?) and your advice is very helpful. DD is entering 9th grade and will be a first year L10 with very strong skills (10.0 start on every event and impressive tumbling and vault). She...
DD has been going on and on about how her coach is totally freaked out about practice today because he had TWO gymnasts break their arms once on Friday the 13th! Practice is over in 2 minutes and I haven't received any calls yet...
I requested to join that group as well. I received a nice reply from the moderator that they were trying to work out some kinks in the group, but I have not heard back for a few weeks. I'd really like to join - Level 10 seems like a whole other ball of wax and I'd love to hear from some...
Skids are wrist supports that are similar to Tiger Paws, but don't cover as much area. They offer support with more movement. We got ours on Amazon. LGync, is your DD doing Yurchenkos yet? My DD's coach would not let the girls vault Yurchenkos without wrist support because of the tremendous...
Fuzi, my daughter has had the same issue with her big toe for over a year now - all started in L8 with the double turn - she kept catching it and "dislocating" it as she says. I had never thought to have her try gym shoes - she just tapes her first two toes and hopes for the best. I think...
We dealt with this last year, but caught it right away. DD stopped vault for 2 weeks and then GRADUALLY began easing back into it. If there was any pain, she immediately cut back on her reps. After 6 weeks, her X-rays showed improvement, so we continued with this plan and have not had any...
