Anon DP Vaults- scenarios in meets allowing 3 attempts?

Thank you! That is helpful. I guess this falls under #2 if they landed on their bottom both times? It’s a bummer for the girls that landed on their feet twice but had bent legs in flight or other deductions. They scored lower than those girls’ 3rd attempts. The rules are the rules so it’s a...

Anon DP Vaults- scenarios in meets allowing 3 attempts?

We were at a meet this weekend and just when us parents thought we’d figured out how these things work, we saw some girls doing 3 vault attempts. This was a sanctioned, USAG meet and the session was for Level 3s. I’m wondering if we missed an obvious explanation for the situation or if there is...

WAG deduction for stain on Leo???

Additional thought: if it’s already pretty bad and you’re brave, wash the entire thing by hand in the sink in cold water with a Shout Color Catcher sheet. I did this with the aforementioned burgundy/white Leo and the dye that ran was unstable enough that it rinsed out. Dry flat on a towel with...

WAG deduction for stain on Leo???

I think you need to talk to her coaches. When this happened with a batch of our leotards, they had girls in different sessions swap leotards on meet weekends to get through the season. It happened with a lot of leotards, though, so they were able to make a claim with the manufacturer. If yours...

    Parents Scratching

The only things that scratching would impact would be around qualifying for states/regionals/nationals depending on level + state, plus eligibility for the next level up in the next season.

    Parents Post competition debrief

Practice as usual. Drives my daughter crazy and it mystifies me- there’s no feedback when things go badly and no acknowledgement when they go well. I’ve always wondered if that’s normal so I hope others chime in.

    Parents Pre team

At our gym it would be less based on skills at that age than potential. A few novice girls with that list or less but extraordinary strength and ease/coachability came in for a screening and were sent straight to the group training for Level 3. Others with those skills but messy form or less...

    Parents Understanding TOPS

I have no stake in TOPS, but didn’t they announce at some point this summer that they were going to have TOPS sessions at certain big meets with specific skills judging? It was going to be between initial skills testing and camps. Did that get dropped? I think that’s what people are mentioning...

Parents how do we stand out hosting first meet?

If it’s a meet at a gym, I feel differently than if it’s at a big convention center. If it doesn’t go well it feels like a yucky money grab since the host is not paying rental fees, is mostly running off of volunteer labor and is charging admission plus meet fees. The worst gym-hosted meet we...

    Parents Favorite meet gift?

Leos and t-shirts are what our girls like the best. One local meet has a distinctive leo that changes slightly each year. That one is a perennial favorite and there is some status to to wearing really old ones received as hand-me-downs.

    Parents The enrollment cliff

I follow demographics because I’m involved in school enrollment planning. There will be another dip in overall US birth rates years after the kids born in 2015 or so. Gymnastics is too small of a population to be impacted by this at the NCAA level. It is already affecting school enrollment in...

Parents Elite sports that require “other” lessons

I grew up somewhere where the sport you’re talking about was a big deal! The best girl in my town did competitive dance 5-6 days a week and doing that sport was a side thing for her. Looking back, she was probably doing it for 10-20 hours/week in addition to dance. The other two girls that...

    Parents Results with PRP?

A non-gymnast family member did it. I don’t think their injury would have improved as much as it did without it, but it wasn’t a magical fix and they still have mobility limitations in that joint. It was recommended to me for Achilles tendonosis but with the caveat that it was in the “won’t hurt...

    Off Topic Corkscrew hair pins?

Our gym is a no-donut, no-net gym. Having worn the corkscrew pins for many weddings I would not recommend them without a donut or net for a meet. You’d still need a ton of hairpins or Bobby pins to secure the edges of the bun because of the way the corkscrew pins have to criss cross in the...

    Parents Sports after Gymnastics

Definitely try diving. Springboard can be tough on old ankle or back injuries so move with caution and make sure they have a good dryland plan for her.

Parents Excessive loss of team members?

Wow, 80% seems high! I calculated and ours was less than 10% during the season and all but one left before the first meet. Now if you’re asking about year to year, I think it’s a little higher, especially for those finishing levels 5-7. But the numbers aren’t clear yet because school just let...

    WAG In house recreational team?

I know of a fairly big one for WAG at an xcel-only gym who don’t want to commit to 2-hour practices or who don’t make it past the waitlists for the classes that lead to the pre-competitive program for xcel. The routines I saw used DP level 2 and 3 routines for bars, level 2 vaults at all levels...

    Parents Moving to NYC

Start with Chelsea Piers, NYC Elite, and Gotham. Gotham has DP and NGAIC but not xcel. They poached a lot of girls from NYC Elite when they opened. I think Chelsea Piers has DP but their xcel team stops at Platinum. Given constraints on team size, unless you have a specific idea of your apt. +...

    Parents Athletic headbands/coverings for alopecia?

I’ve been thinking about your daughter since you posted. In my initial response I didn’t mentioned that my daughter has very mild alopecia areta that for now responds to topical steroids, and depending on your daughter’s diagnosis I hope topical or injected steroids are an option if she wants...

    Parents Athletic headbands/coverings for alopecia?

Maybe ask her coaches for ideas that would be safe? Our gym doesn’t allow headbands because they can slip over girls’ eyes. I wonder if a Nike skull cap like the kind that football players wear under helmets might work and stay on?
