Thank you! I had just starting noticing the college AcroTumbling programs. We will definitely keep it in consideration. Glad to hear that this option was so positive for your gymnast!!
Hi Ty’s Dad. I appreciate your reply! With the information in this post, I think it would be good advice. Sk8ermaiden and Idw4lmo have been interacting with me on my additional recent posts that also include more details about what I have come to confirm as a toxic environment, not just lax...
Yeah, I know their language is pretty nuts. Can’t imagine how this would be enforcable, and if it’s a scare tactic, that also speaks volumes. Thank you for the insight both as a parent and forever gymnast. "SafeSport” I think would be a good phrase to bring into our exit discussion with this...
I felt nauseated signing it but really had no frame of reference and without it she couldn't be at this gym. We didn't have reason to believe we would want to leave. But the advice you suggest is good, and maybe something will come of the fact that this seems like an abomination of typical gym...
Thank you MILgymFAN. The only behavioral stipulation is this in the "personal consent" section (which applies to everything they do there, classes, birthday parties, etc, and team): "We will follow the posted Rules of Participation, dress modestly and act in a calm moral manner or risk of...
Here's the update... the coaches/coordinators never had the "team meeting" tonight. So I'd say that's a pretty definitive, explicative indication of how much effort they plan to put into rectifying this. And not even a word or comment to me or my husband who both visited the gym at different...
It is very clear now that we need to pull our daughter out of her current (toxic) gym -- if you're interested in details, they're in my other posts (we are new to this community this past week as we have been seeking counsel, advice and support -- and you guys have been OUTSTANDING!! Thank...
Thank you for the reply and insight. Knowing that there is a “subculture” of “inclusive” gyms as you called it, confirms our suspicions. Except I’d even say there’s less focus on doing it for the girls’ benefit and more for running the business. We started getting suspicious last year when...
Thanks for helping us brainstorm. We thought about Xcel again, but it certainly lower down on the potential options. Your encouragement about other option as far as college gymnastics is well received. As far as “what do I want to be when I grow up?” — gymnastics fits into the picture one way...
Thank you. With the help and encouragement from this forum and others, we are actively looking into alternative options. Kiddo still putting on a brave face and going back to the lions den everyday. We are trying to have her focus on the pure joy in the moment doing what she loves. My girl...
Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I think we know that her path has not been typical, but as long as she wants to keep working as hard as a 14 yo can and pouring her heart into it, we’ll support her. It’s her dream, not ours. Heck, when I was a freshman in high school I was convinced I...
Thank you for affirming that this is not a “normal” environment. At least we can move forward with the expectation of a more healthily environment. We have been reasearching other gyms in our area. Next step is as you mention... scouting them out (maybe in disguise ... trying to lighten my own...
Thank you for your thoughtful consideration and reply. The advice about “gyms talk” was heard loud and clear. We are beginning process of exploring other immediate options and will use caution to protect her standing at her current gym in the meantime. Thanks again!!
Thank you. You’re right, I didn’t. I realized this post was an emotional near-rant, and when I realized there were other places I could post, I wanted to be more rational - or at least try to be;). That night was the first time I found this forum. Thank you so very much for your thoughtful...
Homeschooling actually came before gymnastics for us, but has been very helpful in maintaining mental health and sleep. We live in a very homeschool and alternative school friendly state and there are MANY options. We also know “child actors” who are “virtual schooled”
I agree that...
Thank you for sharing! This is so encouraging to hear. Our girl started gymnastics late and there’s some chance won’t make level 10 by senior year, but she absolutely LOVES the sport and is really working hard toward her goal of competing in college. Thanks again!!
Our 14 yo daughter had a late start in gymnastics but fell in love and progressed fairly quickly. She competed Xcel up through Platinum last year, and over summer was "graduated" to JO Optionals. So far, she competed one lvl 4 meet, and then one lvl 5. She did well on scores and now is...
