    New Coach

I agree with everything posted above, and wanted to add a few things I do with my kids. One is the tightrope. Get them on the beam (with mats under, of course) and have them walk across it. Tell them it's a tightrope and have everyone pick things that are under it, like sharks, bugs, etc. It...

    Hair Idea's!

I do a french braid across the front of my head similar to this one. But I just go from ear to ear and secure that, then pull the rest up into a high bun. Or I divide the front into three sections, make three french braids to the crown of my head and pull it into a high bun. I detest...

    Past Olympians Making Possible Comeback?

Nastia has posted on Twitter multiple times that she's been in the gym training in recent months. I took that to mean that she was planning on returning to competition. And I guess my sarcasm wasn't interpreted but I meant my post about her chance at the AA to be somewhat sarcastic, in that it...

    Dance and gymnastics

My mistake. I knew the girls took class at WOGA, but for some reason I thought Nastia did more than that, but I could be wrong. I guess I associated her artistry with a Ballet background. And I feel bad, because I have a hard time watching a powerful gymnast like Rebecca show absolutely no...

    Dance and gymnastics

Ballet (and dance in general) gives you the artistic edge over someone who hasn't taken dance. Look at Nastia Liukin. She had ballet training, which helped her with extensions, lines and a "game face", versus Rebecca Bross, who has tons of power, but her face is stone and her lines (to me) end...

    Past Olympians Making Possible Comeback?

Alicia Sacramone decided that she had something left to prove. It's that thought in the back of her mind that keeps her in the gym. Her performance at the 2010 Nationals wasn't the greatest, but it was also her first large competition since Bejing, so it was to be expected that she wasn't 100%...

Getting 6 Year old to FOCUS

My little ones LOVE sticker cards. They bring them each week and if they do well and listen and focus, they get a sticker. I don't often NOT give stickers, because I feel bad singling them out (I coach 3 and 4 year olds), but they don't know that, and I haven't had a single problem since. I also...

How to do hair for gymnastics?

i usually do one or two french braids either all the way down, or doing them so they meet in the middle and the top of my neck and making a bun or ponytail. The only issue I ever had with the bun is sometimes if it's a little too high it hurts doing backrolls, but only for a second.

    Question about recital

I see where you're coming from. Peanut's class is called Tiny Tumbling, and is a combination of dance and gymnastics. He's learned the basics of tumbling, such as rolls, cartwheels, handstands, etc, but he also learns something called creative movement, like skipping, animal walks, and he even...

    Shawn Johnson injured skiing

Well, she's making a come back. Go Shawn! I'll be interested to see how she does, as we'll be picking up from the same place this summer. I had surgery a month ago and plan to compete in February.

    Ankle injury?

Gymnasts often have high pain tolerances, but I'd say if you're experiencing pain, you should see a doctor. Is it swollen, tender or hot to the touch? Those are often signs of muscle injuries. But if it's a sharp pain, or you feel nauseous at all, that can be a sign of a fracture, including...

    Shawn Johnson injured skiing

@gymgurl I actually have to have surgery next week from a gym injury that was made worse from skiing. Same thing that happened to poor little Shawn. But after I got hurt I was ready to go home and get my life back to normal. She actually stayed on the trip and tried to enjoy herself. I really...

    Shawn Johnson injured skiing

I actually found out on Twitter when she posted something about being on crutches at Disney. Poor thing. Skiing injures are nasty, as I've experienced. Anyone have any thoughts about her going to London in 2012? Here's the article: The Canadian Press: Olympic gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson...

    How tall are you?

I'm currently 5'5, but in my gym days, I was about 5'2. I had a growth spurt, changed my center of gravity, and that seemed to be the end of my gym career, seeing as how my injury could actually be directly related to that change. :) boo for growing. However, my SO is only 5'4, so if and when we...

    Off Topic Chrismuhannukwanzadonaliastice gifts thread

I got clothes and a jacket, plus a day of skiing courtesy of my brother, who doesn't see the dangers of a performer on an icy mountain weeks before competition season begins. Haha, but it was still really fun. I got some other weird stuff, like socks, and a teeth-whitening kit (?). As far as...

    Off Topic Halloween Costumes!

Some kids from the studio: Travis and Alex doing "Corpse Bride" Some of the advanced kids. We did Thriller. Aaron (in the middle) was our Michael Jackson. And then a whole group of skeletons. Oh, here I am as a zombie. I took this on my mac because I hadn't even seen the finished product.

    This week I accomplished...

front walkover on floor. My back is the most inflexible part of me, so it was big to be able to do that again. Also, cartwheel to BWO on low beam. I'm terrified to get back on the high beam, though. Does anyone else notice that a back walkover is easier than front? I would think it's the other...

    Parents Hair bows???

Our kids wear scrunchies around their buns or ponytails. If the company doesn't sell then to match, a lot of times you can get scrap fabric from the leo company to match the leo. All you do is cut a 6x3 inch strip, sew it in a tube, and then get 4 or 5 inches of elastic and thread it through the...
