i was just wondering what everyone thought of the 6-3-3 format for team finals. i like that the gymnast have to be consistant and it makes for a more exciting final, but i think this format promotes specialist, which i dont like, and i also think it is less of a "team" competition because some girls dont even compete in the final. so i would prefer to see a 6-5-5 format...what do you think?

I agree that I think it promotes a specialist mentality. Also during this Olympics everything seemed to revolve around (to me at least) Shawn and Nastia, Nastia and Shawn... Where was the rest of the team???

It seemed all about Shawn to me lol...even though Nastia won (yay!).

Everyone should compete in team- what use would a running or swimming relay team be if only three members swam/ran?

I see how the 3 up 3 counts builds some excitement in the team final, but I personally wish for the old team format to return - I loved to watch more different gymnasts of the teams definitely and don´t mind at all if there is one score they could drop.

Gee, our two strongest gymnasts featured in each rotation? I wonder why.

You do remember that Sam and Chells were injured, right? Leaving them with Shawn, Nas, Bridget, and Alicia.

I imagine that Chelsea, at least, would have really pulled her weight had she been healthy. If Sam had been healthy, Nas wouldn't have gone on floor.

:p Your name really suits you!:D

I don't disagree with Nastia and Shawn being in every rotation, I just would like to have seen at least the four of them on all four events...

OT... My dh kept saying that poor Nastia likely was called some horrible things in school...

I do not like the 6-3-3 format. There's too much possibility for injury or other fluke things to knock a team out of the medals. Take Russia in 2007 and Semenova's run into the vault table that dropped Russia from third to last. Or the USA in 2006 - what if Memmel couldn't continue after her shoulder injury (and if it were anyone else with that injury, she would have been out, the USA was lucky it was tough-as-nails Memmel)? The USA would have been last place.

I also dislike that the qualification requirements are different than what's used in the team finals. For the USA it doesn't matter, but for the bubble teams, they are forced to decide whether to construct a team that is good for 6-5-4 and will make finals or a team that's good for 6-3-3 and risk not making finals for a better overall result.

For those of you who want to see more than just a team's top two gymnasts doing most of the routines in finals, 2010 should make you happy with the new 5-5-4 in prelims and 5-3-3 in finals.

6-3-3 is just one of the many stupid changes the FIG has come up with to make gymnastics more interesting and exciting for people who aren't really all that into gymnastics anyway. It's a marketing device and it's sad.

6-3-3 takes away the value of a team with depth and talent on four events. It waters down the sport, and along with the code, has made gymnastics a joke to the average person. Great thinking...now the sport is ruined for those who love it as well as those who didn't care anyway.
