I have read all the Aly vs Gabby debates... I understand all the rules and why only 3 AA's had a chance given that Kocian performed during team qualifications... My question: Why not sit Kocian and let the 4 best AA's in the world go for it...??? The AA is the Holy Grail, let them duke it out for a spot in the AA Final...
Please don't say it was for max points, we CRUSHED by 10 over China... (MK knew the USA would win easy) I realize that Kocian is a great at UB and she could medal... so could Skinner on Vault and Locklear on UB and Ragan on Beam and on and on... the 5th gymnast on this team could have been my Level 3 DD and you still win Team and AA Gold... and a lot more... It is frustrating because there are no guarantees... will Laurie be back for Tokyo...??? The trials should have mattered more...

It's not just about the team competition, as others have said.
In terms of medal count it makes more sense for USA to try to maximize their event finals results. With all 4 AA up in quals, only Gabby would have qualified for the uneven bars final. So if the choice is between letting all the AAers compete in quals and letting Kocian qualify for the bars final, it's the decision between having the chance for 2 UB titles or only 1. We can only have 2 in the AA anyway, so we don't have a chance to win more medals by letting all the AAers do qualifications.

So we also have chance at gold at UB. I think the way it's set up we have a chance at gold on every event.

I agree for the most part... the problem is other athletes could medal also, skinner / locklear specifically...

It's not about extra

If Skinner went, then she would have to compete vault in the qualifiers, so someone would still have to be taken off the AA. What's your point?

Exactly...!!! My point is that 1 event medal does not outweigh the AA... Kocian on Bars or Locklear on Bars or Skinner -on Vault or Smith on Beam... why Kocian...??? I like her, it's not that. As the title suggest, I believe the priority should be given to the AA and letting everyone who had a "reasonable chance" to qualify for the AA final go... I guess if Laurie wasn't close then pick a specialist... Laurie was 2nd at trials and probably would have been very close to 2nd at Qualifying...

I think it is sad and frustrating.... btw, I am VERY happy for Kocian

Kocian is the reigning world champion on her event and she won her event at trials and her event is the one that the USA's best AAers are weakest....if you only take one event specialist, it's Kocian, hands down.

I agree, I would have chosen Kocian as the one specialist... I do think other specialists could medal, but not Gold....

Simone is very dominant on vault, so Skinner wouldn't be expected to win anyway. Silver at the very best.
Whereas there is no Simone on bars to beat. It will be a very close race and basically any gymnast from the top 8 can win.

YOu will get your wish in 202o. 4 on the team, 4 up, 3 count. So all team members will have to be AAers and the event specialists will qualify separately (2 of them) and not be a part of the team.

and not be a part of the team.

I'm curious what this means exactly. I am thinking it means...

- the event specialists will still represent their country - as in still wear the colors and emblem, etc
- the event specialist will NOT receive a medal for team award if their "core 4" win a medal in team competition

Such a weird divide.. I guess we'll get used to it..

Other implications there that I missed?

It will make the selection process easier, relatively speaking.

Whoa wait. I knew there were only going to be 4 on the team. Are you saying there will be an additional 2 that are sent solely for individual medals? How did I not know this?! Or am I misunderstanding?

Yes, per country up to 6 total (4 on team, up to 2 AA who separately qualify)

"The team format will be four gymnasts, four compete on each appataus, and three scores count. The best countries will be able to qualify up to two individual gymnasts also through World Cups, Challenge Cups, and Continental Championships. There are many other formulas for AA gymnasts to qualify outside of the teams. The final details are still to be worked out, but the format is now set."

The event specialists will represent their country, but scores will not count toward the team score, and no team medal

Wow, so we could actually end up qualifying more women not less? That's really interesting!

I meant to say "Yes, per country up to 6 total (4 on team, plus up to 2 AA OR event specialists who separately qualify)". Sorry about the error there.
