WAG Avulsion fracture in an eight year old :( Does anyone have experience with this?

Did he say anything else? Ie, a better diagnosis? I would be very cautious... even if she isn't in "that much pain" there still can be a lot going on in there. I doubt it is too serious - probably no torn ligaments and obviously no breaks, but there could be bone bruising or stress near the growth plate, and that will take a bit longer to heal. And yes, UC x-rays usually aren't as clear as an ER or orthopedics x-ray (meaning worse quality), so it is a bit harder to read and the doctors are less experienced. Glad for the good news, sending healing fairies :)

Well, she had actually been doing pretty well this week and we thought there might be a chance of her competing at least bars and beam on Sunday, but now it's official that she will not :( This morning she woke up with terrible pain in her side and then vomiting. We brought her to urgent care, and they sent us to the hospital fearing appendicitis. Thank God she's ok, but this was just the nail in the coffin with regard to scratching the meet. They did a million tests (trying to keep my story short!) and they don't really know what it was, so are assuming musculoskeletal. She must have tweaked something at practice last night and didn't feel it until this morning? It was her right side, so maybe her left foot being injured made her compensate strangely? My only other theory is that she has this crazy thing called Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome, which the gastroenterologist also calls "abdominal migraines". It's a serotonin thing. It has never manifested this way before, but she has been obsessed in the last week and a half with competing this weekend and was pretty upset last night about it, so maybe stress triggered some sort of migraine? I don't know. I'm just happy my baby is ok. Maybe this is a blessing in disguise that she'll actually have four full days off (Fridays she is usually off and no practice Sat b/c of the meet) to rest the foot. She was furious we wouldn't let her go tonight, it was actually her first question to the doctor at the hospital! But we thought it was best. She still wants to go to cheer on her teammates though its at 8am session over an hour away. :) Thanks again for everyone's good thoughts! Her next meet is January 30 and hopefully she'll come back stronger than ever!

I have a kid with cyclical vomiting. If it starts looking more like she has that, feel free to pm me. We have been dealing with it for 4 years now.

Wow! Good to know! I guess I wrote that awkwardly. She does have CVS. Its just never looked like this before, and she said it was different, but it still crossed my mind. This started a little over a year ago...I shall pm you at a later date (I need to get to bed! Thursdays are my rough days in general, and this madness didn't help!) Thank you!!

Poor thing! She's had a rough time of it! I hope she feels better soon! There are a lot of stomach viruses going around so fingers crossed that it's just something like that and goes away with no more issues! I'm so sorry she is going through this, it's awful to watch your child hurting. =(

What a sweet little girl you have. I know she must be super bummed that she cannot compete, but I love that she still wants to go to cheer her teammates on. If she stays in the sport into her teens, she will almost certainly be a "team mom." In other words, she will be a role model to younger girls, and will be there for them when it matters most. Team spirit and camaraderie is so important.

You have become one of my favorite people to follow on ChalkBucket because of your enthusiasm and dedication to your daughter. I'm positive she will come back better, faster, smarter, stronger. Every set back in this sport equals a life lesson learned.

My DD (then age 10) had an avulsion fracture of 5th metatarsal, non Jones, in 2011- as a matter of fact this very week. We were getting on a plane 4 days later to a meet, and she attended in her boot. Wore boot for 4 weeks, then non weight baring for 2 more. During this time she was allowed upper body conditioning. After that, Started back slowly with vault being the last to attempt, 9 weeks out. Was out for 10 weeks total from fracture to first full meet.

As much as this sucks, your DD is very young and no need to rush back. She needs to heal properly.

To ease your fears some... When I was in 8th grade (14 years old), I injured my right wrist during a softball game. Went to urgent care, got X-rays, was diagnosed with a DEFINITE fracture.

Saw specialist a couple of days later who frustratingly explained that my wrist was not at all broken, but rather that what the previous doc saw on X-ray was my growth plate. I was fine by the time my high school volleyball season started.

Also, my DD injured her elbow last spring. Regular doc had it x-rayed, stated 50:50 odds on whether it was an avulsion fracture or just her (wide-open!) growth plate. Had specialist just review X-ray (also luckily had a teammates' parent who is a staff radiologist at the same practice offer to look), who said it was likely just her growth plate, especially given her size for her age (small), and when considering her growth curve over time. Sent her to practice on light work for a couple of weeks, and thankfully, she was just fine.

Wow! Thank you so much, that really means a lot. We're making the best of it and yes, hopefully she'll come back stronger for Jan 30! :)

Dd had an avulsion fx and torn hamstring. Not visible on xray, MRI was the only way to properly diagnose in her case.

I'm afraid I don't have anything good to say. I got an avulsion fracture coaching last year, and was put in a boot for 6 weeks, a brace for another 4. I still had a lot of problems with it and ended up getting several steroid shots, an MRI and a bone scan that showed lots a ligament damage, my ATFL looking like "dental floss". I ended up getting complete reconstruction a few weeks ago and am back in a boot for the time being. Keep in mind, I am 20, not 8 and my joints were pretty beat up in the first place from years of gymnastics, but avulsion fractures can be pretty nasty, let her heal properly without rushing her back.
