My daughter recently started experiencing some back pain, we had an MRI done and they see a slipped disk under the t12 vertebrae. The doctor told me it’s ok to have my daughter continue in the gym as normal but I am super worried about further injuries. Has anyone else been through this that can give any advice!?

Yes, I would look at getting her to a specialist physio who works with gymnasts specifically. It is a very unique sport.

Has the physio given her exersizes to do to increase core strength, to take the pressure off the back? I would make sure the coach has these exersizes as well.

She will need to reduce the load of back arching skills that she does. If anything causes pain she should not be doing it.

Thank you! She has not seen a physical therapist yet. I need to find someone in my area which doesn’t seem easy to find someone who works with gymnasts.

Ask around the gyms in your area and see who they use, and who they recommend.

Definitely this our gym has a PT they recommend from the basics to more serious injuries and they are awesome. We had some small knee/heel pain and having a resource other than a Pediatrician to look at the issue was very beneficial and it was great for me to know they had extensive expereince with gymnastics and the issues gymnasts face.

I have dealt with a slipped disc and it took intensive physical therapy for me to return. I also had to take a significant amount of time off but they had originally thought I had something much more serious (stress fracture, spondy, etc) but after 2 MRI’s they settled on a slipped disc. I am since back to full gymnastics though. I definitely recommend PT.
