My DD was playing around on the trampoline on Saturday doing Back handsprings and such and landed on her stomach with her chest lifted. She says she heard a crack and now her lower back is hurting her. We iced it the first day and then yesterday evening started using a heating pad. The ice did not seem to help at all however the heat has helped with the pain. Does this indicate that it is probably a muscle strain since ice has done nothing to help?. My husband has had back problems since he was in his 20's but caused by lifting improperly. What are your thoughts? I hate this and she is soooo upset that she can't go to gymnastics on Tuesday because we thought she probably needs to rest her back for a while.

I have to say if that happended to my DD I'd have her in to see an ortho as soon as possible. The crack doesn't sound good and should be checked out. Dealing with it quickly can stop long term back problems as an adult.

She certainly shouldn't do gym whilst she has any pain.

Good luck, I know it is tough on them when they cannot do gym, but she only has one back for her whole life.

Thanks so much...I just needed someone else tell me what I already knew! I just called and she has an appointment today with a orthopedic sports specialist...apparently someone JUST cancelled!! Must have been fate! I know Alex is really worried because she remembers her daddy's back surgery. I will post when we know more!!

Excellent, your Mom instinct is the most important thing concerning your kids. Let us know how it goes.

I know back issues run on both sides of our family, so I am on any back pain immediately.

if it keeps hurting her for more than about 2-4 days, i would tell a doctor because you never know if you might have injured yourself!!

Oh I hope she's o.k.! Please let us know what the Dr. had to say.....

I know back injuries can be devastating if they're not treated properly.

Well, she has sprained her back the x-ray did not show anything else so no gym for a week and then if she is pain free she can go back. But if she has any continued pain she is to go back for a follow up and stop practice again. I thank all of you for the well wishes and I will let you know how she is doing!!! I do love this forum!!!

thats good. it will feel like the longest week ever without gymnastics but when she goes back then hopefully it doesn hurt. hope her back gets better soon.

Hope all is better by the end of the week.

Hopefully you can find something safe and fun to do during the meantime!
