Has anyone's gymnast complain of back pain when starting giants?

10yr old DD just started working baby giants on strap bar this week and has complained about lower back pain. Mainly muscle pain/strain.

Chalk it up to new skill (like the backwalkover muscle back pain) or maybe form? She is a very strong gymnast. She opted out of giants training today because she wanted to rest her back. We are icing, heat pad, stretching and massaging it regularly.

She trained this skill last summer for a few weeks with no problem, but she's also grown like 5" since last summer.

if it hurts with other extension moves, like BWO, take her to be seen. gymnasts (and other athletes who do repetitive hyperextn of the back like volleyball, even tennis, etc) can get stress fractures of the spine (pars interarticularis) that can be treated conservatively and quickly if done early.

Tapping on bars (especially tapping for giants) can hurt your back if your stomach isn't engaged/if you don't have the correct technique with respect to the stomach/core/hips area. Definitely get it checked out - better safe than sorry, especially with the back.

Get it checked. Hopefully, it won't be anything serious, but even if it isn't it can get there. It sounds like she is stressing her lower back when doing certain skills, and even if not a serious injury may benefit from pt to learn to engage her skills differently so as not to make her back hurt.

Agree...get it checked. She could be arching when she's casting into those Giants, casting over or falling. This can really stress the back just like BWO do especially if there was anything else at all in her back going on. When my DD's back injury was at it's worse casting over/arching on a giant was excruciating. Get it checked, better to be very proactive here!

Yes, my DD had a lot of back pain on strap bar but not on any other bar. They just skipped strap bar. We are dealing with some big back issues at the moment.
