WAG Beauty Contest at Europeans?!!

I read this yesterday and my immediate thought was what the hell! These are amazingly tough, resilient, strong athletes and we're talking about who looks prettiest?

Lame!

I take no offense to the swearing. It inspired me to swear when I read it. It's insulting and believe me I am not a feminist by any means. You want to compete at a beauty pageant or be a girly-girl, more power to ya!

But half these girls are minors and they are literally out there doing a sport that could seriously injure them at any given moment and some idiot thought - Hey, let's see who's the cutest.

Well I nominate the person who came up with this for the Douchebag of the Day award.

I really am speechless! And I find it kind of insulting! These girls work hard and now they have to make sure they look cute while doing it? Please!

Hmm. I'm not 100% sure what went on from that article. I wonder if there's some kind of translation issue and it wasn't really "most attractive" but was just "miss European Championships" among other superlatives.

Because I've never heard of anything remotely like voting for the most attractive at a gymnastics competition before. Obviously I don't think that's right it appropriate, but I wonder if we're not missing something since it seems so off.

Here is another article on this "contest". A portion of the article states that:

...Larisa Iordache was nominated “Miss European Championship 2014” by the specialists and journalists present in Sofia “for the elegance of her performances, for the commanding appearance and attitude shown during the competition.”

Still weird in my book. Gymnastics is a sport, not a beauty, elegance or appearance competition.

I don't like that at all!! How awful! When I first read it, I thought it was from "the onion" but realized that this article was from foreign ground! This is completely unnecessary in the sport of gymnastics!! :(

I think, looking back at the source, that it suffers from translation. To my mind I think they are talking aesthetics rather than looks. European gymnastics does put a lot more emphasis on aesthetics.

I was so irritated when I read this yesterday. Some of the comments on the article were disturbing.
