So my daughters' good friend broke both ankles at the gym Tuesday night. I was on pick up duty and she actually fell just as I came in. I missed the fall but saw the rolling on the ground. She actually told my daughter right after that she was fine and was moving feet around. Well coaches and athletic trainer, who happened to be there that night, checked her out. Ice, elevate, ect. She was on the floor for probably 30 min. Then they carried her to my van. I could see the swelling from about 30ft away! Her parents decided to wait until the next day as it was 9 at night. Xrays revealed 4 breaks on left and 2 on right. She is expected to heal well and hasn't been in much pain. She plans to do Halloween sleepover at the gym tomorrow, and went to her last volleyball game in wheelchair where her teammates wore her number on their sleeves.

Anyway, gymnasts are tough cookies!

By the way she landed "off" from a whipback heading into a back tuck.

Poor girl that is an awful thing to happen, hoping she heals well and quickly. Her parents must've freaked. That seems like a lot ofvfractures for a fall, are they looking into other things?

quote from the OP Dunno.

Poor girl that sounds so horrible. I can't imagine how her parents must feel. I would be devastated to think of my kid in pain and injured like that. I do hope she heals fast and without complications.

She is responding so well that her parents are just fine. The doctors said she will be able to do gymnastics again and may even be skiing by January. She still hasn't really had much pain!

Not sure what you mean by "looking into other things".

I think what bog meant was, that maybe there's something going on with her bones that she had so many breaks?? Will they be running any tests? And, I would've taken her to the ER right away, not waited until the morning! JMHO!

I agree, would have headed straight to the ER if it were my kid. The ER wait probably would have been shorter late at night too. I also agree with Bog, that's a lot of fractures for one "off landing". It may warrant futher examination/testing to make sure her bones are ok & that there isn't some underlying issue going on. Poor thing...I wish her well!!!

Yup, 9pm or 2am, I would have had that poor kid in the emergency room. No way would I have waited until the next day.

Yes, all the fractures she suffered are unusual for a normal healthy kid. She should have a full physical done to make sure there is no other medical problem.

BTW--To the OP, this is absolutely no attack on you. I think the coaches should have insisted the parents come to the gym or have called 911. They shouldn't have left you to take this poor kid home.

OH NO!!! That is terrible!! hope she heals quickly and can get back in the gym soon

I meant what the other posters have said. Kids her age do not usually break this easily without some underlying issue. I would've had her at the hosptial straight away with bilateral pain, and I would be talking to orthopedic specialists about the nature of the injuries.

If she "just" landed a whip badly I would not expect such extreme injury.

her feet must've been in a precarious position when she punched in to the 2nd somi...assuming she did whip to punch to something else.?
