Coach
Proud Parent
Some of our girls are competing L7 this weekend and we're told by the coach nit to worry if they don't score well they can go back to L6 since meet is before February. Is this such a thing? We are region 6 if that makes a difference.

Yes, it is possible and happens rather frequently (especially early in the season). I believe that as long as they haven’t competed at State, they can drop back without a petition.

Thanks so let's say gymnast competed it in November as L7 did badly can she start competing as L6

As long as it is before a certain date. I think here in NY it is by the end of January as my dd was/is possibly going to move from 6 to 7 and had to be done by end of Jan. I think....hard to get straight answer.

Moving up is never a problem. Moving back usually has deadlines.

We were told that my daughter had a deadline to move up. If she did not move up by a certain date then she has to compete states at the current level. Was told this by more than one person. Pretty sure I saw it somewhere in writing as well.

In our state there is A declaration date of february 1st. By this date you have to either drop back or commit to current level for the season. This date also applies to declaring as a specialist.

If you d9nt qualify to state then you can petition to drop back the following season. If you do qualify and compete at state then you are not allowed to fall back the following season except under certain circumstances. If they say yes, then they can drop back one level.

There are no mobility rules between five and six and a gymnast can go back and forth without petitioning. I would think that the declaration date would still apply for that particular season but I don’t know that for sure

Here are the rules from usag site.

  1. Once a gymnast has competed in a Sectional meet, she may NOT drop back to a lower level in the same competitive season.
    • If no Sectional meet is held, then the State Administrative Committee must determine prior to the beginning of the competitive year, a designated "declaration" date for each level for such purpose.
  2. If a gymnast does not qualify to the State Championships, she may petition to drop back one Level at the beginning of the next competitive season.
    1. For Levels 7 and below, petition is sent to the State Administrative Committee Chairman.
    2. For Levels 8, 9 & 10, petition is sent to the Regional Technical Committee Chairman.
  3. Once an athlete competes in the State Championships, she is not allowed to drop back.
Valid reasons would be considered by the State Administrative Committee Chairman (for Levels 7 & below) or the Regional Technical Committee Chairman (for Levels 8, 9 & 10) for dropping back an athlete who has competed in a State Championships. Exception: Mobility is allowed back and forth from Levels 5 and 6 without going through the petitioning process.
    1. These reasons would include injury, illness, or other extenuating circumstances that would have prevented the athlete from continuing to train at the level at which they previously competed.
    2. If a valid reason does exist, the athlete would be able to drop back only one NUMERICAL level (i.e. competed Level 8, permission to drop back one numerical level to Level 7.)

Oh to compete States. That is different then moving up. That just requires scoring out.

I would hazard a guess that the date is the deadline to register for states. They want them competing states and if you move someone up with no time to qualify at the new level it kinda leaves them out.

It is actually way before the deadline to register for states, so not sure. Oh well, think we are staying put anyway since new injury last night!

Lol, according to the Ohio rules, if you compete in a meet at a Higher Level after the declaration date, they move you to the state meet for that level... It doesnt say SPECIFICALLY that you have to make the qualification score for the new level, but I would guess you do.
There was a girl that I knew (at a club gym) who was going back and forth between Old 5 and Old 6 for an entire season and they wanted her to compete State at L5, so they made sure not to have her compete L6 after the declaration date (it was for TEAM scores - she was scoring just as well in both Levels, but the L8 team didnt need her scores and L5 did).
