NC-GymGirl

I got this letter from the coach at my high school. It says:
To compete you need to be a Level 7 gymnast. However lower levels can compete also. I'm open to non competitors supporting the team. You would come to all practices and meets, but would not qualify for school awards. I have had some athletes compete on one event only. Which qualifies them for a Letter if they score an "8" or higher.

Minimum skills: To compete

Floor: Back handsprings, front handsprings, acro-skills: back walkover, handstand forward roll
Beam: Handstands, cartwheels, turns, leaps, jumps
Vault: Front handspring over
Bars: pullover, back hip circle, front hip circle, kip, straddle sole circle dismount.

I am able to do everything but a back handspring so would I be able to be a member of the team even though I wouldn't be able to do a back handspring?

I am not totally sure (you would really need to ask your coach specifically), but it sounds like they do accept kids that only compete on certain events. I know for high school sports you can earn a "varsity letter" be reaching certain criteria that the coach and school set guidelines for. I am not sure what the coach means by "competing Level 7" because some of the minimum required skills they listed are less than a level 7. Ask you coach to be sure. Trying to "guess" and breakdown something that is vague will only get you more confused. Good luck and keep us posted!!!

Okayyyy that letter makes no sense so I don't blame you for being confused.

I think you should contact the coach at the earliest opportunity and explain your skills and ask them to clarify what the minimum level to compete is. None of the skills listed (with the exception of FHS vault) are level 7 skills. They're more about level 4-5. So maybe those were meant the skills to be on the team but not compete, or something?

Did they include an email or phone number?

I am hoping that the school gymnastics coach is not also a teacher at the school because that is a horribly-written and very confusing letter.

It isn't written very well. But from my understanding it sounds like you need to have all the min skills that he has listed to compete or be on the team.

No clue, brain hurts...Like everyone else said ask him/her to clarify. My best guess is you have to have level 7 skills to compete for the school, but may be able to practice with the team and cheer them on if you have at least the minimum skills listed, and you may comptete for the school as an event specialist if you are at level 7 skill wise on that event. But really I have no clue what so ever. And the minimum skill list makes no sense. Maybe you need those skills to just train with the team, but a handspring vault is a level 7 vault or can be anyways so yeah I'm confused. I didn't write it and it baffles me. Let us know what you find out.

I agree with this. If it helps, I did HS gym for a year. The average girl was around level 7 or 8 that competed. The top girls in state were all level 10. HS gym wasn't very big in my state a lot of big city schools had to combine teams. Good luck!!!
