Just wondering if any of your daughters (or you gymnasts posting here) are hoping to compete in college? Are you looking for a scholarship? Just curious what people want to do!

Yes!! I really want to get a college scholarship for gymnastics. I am only a level 6 right now, and am already going into the 9th grade, but i believe that if i keep trying and push myself really hard i can do it!! (i spent 2 years in level 4, and 3 1/2 years in level 5...long story :))

I don't want to couse for me college is for school. I hope to do dance in college or maybe do gymnastics just for fun at a gym nearby. I know 2 of my friends that really want to do college gymnastics though!

Yes, college is the goal, scholarship or not. It would certainly help with the financial part, but we will have to wait and see about that. I have been told that the time to start contacting college coaches is during the junior year in high school (which is what dd will be this year) so time to get the video camera out again.

yes ive always wanted to go to college gymnasics i think it would be fun to be on tv right now im13 and a level 9

I am a new L7, and going into 9th grade. I have pretty much given up on a college scholarship, though it would be fun to do it as an itramural, maybe. If I were asked to do it in college I probably would, but I don't think I would be asked to. In short, I've pretty much given up on college gymnastics.

Well, I'm going into 10th grade next year, and i'm going to be a level 9 next year (hopefully) and i've always wanted a college scholarship. I haven't competed USAG for 3 years because of where i live. I'm just going back to it this year (again... hopefully...)
I'm trying out at a new gym right now, and i've made a lot of progress in the few weeks that i've been there. (More progress than i've made in the last two years) But anyways, i'm trying for it. I'm getting kinda old, but i'm hoping i can get there. Just in case, i'm going to make sure to keep up my grades.
:)

My dd definitely wants to do gymnastics in college, it has always been her goal.

She is entering 8th grade this coming Fall and is training level 9, not sure if she will be competing 8 or 9, won't know until we get closer to the season. ;)

I got the chance to listen to a college coach talk about gymnastics in college and trying for a scholarship and she said to start indicating your interest as early at 8th grade! (you fill out interest surveys on the colleges' gymnasticss websites). Start sending out brochures with pictures/stats/YouTube address in 10th grade!

Hard to believe that is just a couple of years away for my dd - time is sure flying by...

No college scholarship for DD... she's going into 9th grade and is a Level 7! But she loves the sport and it keeps her in shape and busy.

My dd is 10 and will compete L7 this year and her goal is to compete in college. But a lot can change between now and then. :)

My gymmie is going into 8th grade and is training L9, but who knows. She is pretty intense about doing gymnastics in college----wants an academic scholarship too!! She thinks it seems fun that most college gymnasts are specialists and her goal is to get on a team to do bars/floor/vault.

I just wanted to remind everyone that NAIGC is an option for a lot of gymnasts who aren't quite NCAA material, or who want an easier time commitment in college. NAIGC is college club, and we compete using L9 rules (without the limit on Ds and Es) and with L10 bonus for Ds and Es. It's a great opportunity for gymnasts of all skill levels; you'll see things from L3 all the way up to 9s, 10s, and a few former national elites.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure a lot of girls would like to continue w/gymnastics at the college level.... . I assume there's a website that lists those colleges that participate. I think I'll go look for that right now! Thanks again.

Just a reminder for those of you who don't explore this board, but there is a college gymnastics forum here. It isn't very active, but you can change that!

I second GymKat's mention of NAIGC, and let me add another reason. Sometimes you will find a college or university that really appeals to you and the only problem is that it doesn't sponsor an NCAA college gymnastics team. Going to a school that has an NAIGC program is one way of having your cake and eating it too.

I have a daughter who is a college gymnast so if you have any questions about the recruiting process or college gymnastics in general, feel free to post a question in the college gymnastics forum or to send me a PM.

And here's a piece of free advice to all aspiring college gymnasts: keep your grades up (or get your grades up!). It is MUCH, MUCH easier to get merit-based financial aid than it is to get a college scholarship. If you are a borderline gymnast, then you expand your options because if a school has already used up its scholarships (usually about three a year), there may still be walk-on spots available.

DD is 13 and Training Level 9.. She would like to get a scholarship one day. We know she is right on the edge.... Even if she competes another year of L8 that gives her 1 year at Level 9 and 3 years of L10. It should put her in line to at least compete in College, if not a partial scholarship.

We have a 2nd year Level 10, she is a freshman and is being recruited pretty actively. We will have our second college coach come visit this week. That is a great opportunity to have a great practice and be seen!

At the age of 5 1/2 DD attended a clinic at Stanford. As we walked through the door into the gym she announced, "I am SO going to Stanford!" Four years later she is a training L7 and still working hard towards the goal she set for herself.

*sigh* I wish we had college gymnastics in Aus...maybe i should move to the S:D
i would LIKE to do gymnastics while im studying uni (which will probably mean a delayed course) but it would be really hard.
This year is going WAY to fast for me:(
