there are high level youth sports who do not treat their child athletes this way at least in europe. i have never ever seen such behavior at elite youth track practice. sometimes in weightlifting but those coaches are far and few between there. never in judo. i wonder if the fact that high level training in wag has to start before puberty hits is related to this issue since in every other youth elite sport you do not start the hardcore work before age 14/15 (for the girls) or 15/16 (for the boys) since there is just no point before all the strength is there.

Apparently Nassars lawyer doesn’t believe all the victims that have given statements:

Shannon Smith said "there is a huge part of me that does not believe that every one of those girls was victimized by him.

"There was no way there could have been so much," she said. "Larry would have to have been doing this all day, every day, with no one catching on. This is a guy who put child pornography in a trash can. He's not a savvy guy."

No he might not of been skilled in disposing of the porn images although my understanding is the bins were due to be emptied so he nearly succeeded in disposing the porn.
Sounds like he’s managed to use his charm on her, the same charm which has allowed him to get away with the abuse for so many years.

That’s just the thing, he was doing this all day, every day because his day job was a “doctor treating his patients.” He pretty much had an unlimited number of girls seeking out his treatment morning, noon, and night because he was so highly revered. And given that he had two decades of this, his current total of 200 over a span of 20 years is completely believable. And plenty of people did know, they all just covered for him or believed his lies to salvage their reputations.

I wouldn't be surprised if his victims are over 1,000. Over 200 have come forward during sentencing.

Evening writing that makes me ill!

This lawyer seems delusional. Most of them talked about him penetrating them WITHOUT WARNING or consent! And most said it was without gloves. That is inappropriate regardless of whether the internal work was warranted or not.

I would like to find out whether these internal procedures are common on other countries’ gymnastics teams. That might give a clue as to how useful and necessary they really are.

His lawyer is part of a legal practice which exclusively defends people accused of sex offences - it sounds like victim blaming is one of their "strategies ... [and] going to great lengths to secure a positive outcome" - from their website

Of course they also negotiated Nassar's guilty plea and plea deal

I know that what Shannon Smith said is highly offensive and upsetting, but do please keep in mind that the US legal system is adversarial in its nature. It is not a system in which counsel are working together to find a unified truth. Her job is to defend her client zealously to the best of her abilities within the rules of the system. No matter what a person is accused of having done, that person is entitled to principled, committed advocacy.

When a lawyer spends a long time on a complex case with a client, working her/his best to represent that client zealously, it's quite common for that lawyer to become personally and emotionally invested in the client's side and story. That's part of what can make a lawyer a really good advocate.

I have nothing but respect for people who choose to take on the difficult work of ensuring that individuals accused of shocking, offensive, and terrible things have their constitutional rights.

Guys , the lawyer has nothing and is just doing her job. Which is to defend that sub human

I can not imagine deciding to make that the purpose if my business. Sure everyone needs a lawyer but to specialize in that area? Again, can’t imagine.

I understand it’s her job. But when she confirmed that she would not be representing him in any future appeals, isn’t her job of defending him considered done? Why defend him after the trial is over and the sentence given if you have no plans to continue as his lawyer? Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think she would still have a legal duty to publicly defend him to the media. That was a voluntary interview, she could have simply refused to speak to ESPN.

It reminds me of the movie “The Devil’s Advocate” with Keanu Reeves. I know that everyone has a right to a lawyer, but I cannot imagine having the job of having to defend someone who has clearly done atrocious things.
