Does the fly away for level 6 have to be a “straight leg” fly away? In level 5 DD did a tucked fly away because she’s been afraid of hitting her toes. She’s now stressing because she’s been told she needs a straight leg fly away in level 6 and has to have it by the first comp in 3 weeks. Not sure if this is a gym rule or a new rule under the changes. If it’s a rule, what is the deduction for a tuck?

Some gyms require the layout, as it is a better preparation for more advanced dismount skills (like double backs), it is also a more effective way to teach the tap. It is also safer, kids doing a tucked flyaway have more of a tendency to pull themselves back in towards the bar.

Thanks for the replies. DD just got back from the gym and it appears they definitely do prefer the lay out fly away but aren’t going to push it this close to comp season. They’ll allow the tuck for now and focus on the lay out when she’s ready and not feeling the pressure of having to get it.

DD's gym pushes them all to have the layout flyaway for level 5. DD got hers quickly (if only she had the same luck with the beam back walkover that is still hit or miss ). There were a few girls who just weren't getting it, so they are doing tucks for comps while still working the layouts during practice. I think sometimes it would be better for them to explain to the girls why they want them to have a certain skill for progression purposes vs. putting the pressure on and then backtracking. Depending on the personality of the kid, the extra pressure that seems arbitrary can make it harder for them to get the skill.

Watching the layout flyaway it seems to be a skill when taught by a technical coach is less likely to result in bar contact. DD has had a non-technical coach and a very technical coach. The Non Technical coach taught in initially and she learned it well enough. The Technical coach explained the process in just a view minutes and cemented the skill with just a few hands-on spots. Just a take away from a parents point of view.

Yeah our gym requires it to be in layout position for 5 as well as 6. Held girly back in 4 last year but year but is fine with it now for 6
