Anyone else is rooting for Jade Carey to get that individual qualification spot to the Olympics?
I'm so excited for her. One more vault win and she is guaranteed a spot, if I understand the qualifications process correctly?

Yes she is my child’s favorite of all time. Loves her story. And vault is my child’s favorite event, so....she is way pulling for her.

I was listening to an interesting podcast that touched on the World Cup process. Apparently the Olympic spots have made it much more competitive. Jade not only won vault, but she did it with a very competitive field (sans Simone). It is my understanding that the results are first based on placement points - not scoring per se, so there is some strategy in deciding which meets (and how many) to compete. I guess I didn’t realize World Cup was a thing before (although, duh - American Cup - shame on me).

They were also saying that if an athlete qualifies for 1 event, then they are on the team and can do other events (so Jade can qualify for vault and do floor even if she doesn’t qualify for that event). I hope her streak continues on floor though - such a great story for kids who don’t go the elite route and aren’t natural performers.

Yes, if she wins the vault spot, she still gets to do any or all events she wants to do at O's. There are 8 total event specialist World Cup competitions 2018-20, athlete counts their top 3 places. So only person that could knock out Jade is someone who also wins 3 of the World Cup events on vault, with their average score as the tie breaker. Jade is the closest thing to a lock right now.

I have heard rumors of Mykayla Skinner coming back for a go at the 2020 Olympics and she is also a Vaulter and Floor ... But i don't know if she has said she was going to try or not!?

I don’t love this situation. If Jade wins the spot and then gets injured, that spot is forfeited.

Since the USA has qualified a team, they can only earn 2 additional total spots. But there are more than 2 ways for USA to earn spots. In addition to the event World Cup nominative spots(those belong to athlete specifically), 2 AA spots will be earned at Pan-Ams and 1 at AA World Cup series in 2020. All those are qualifying spot belonging to country. So if Jade were to get injured, her vault spot would go to someone else from another country, but USA would still likely have placed well enough in either of those other competitions to get to bring a 2nd extra athlete anyway. That's my understanding of this convoluted process, anyway. There will also be additional athlete specific spots awarded at 2019 Worlds but those only go to non-qualifying teams so won't apply to USA. Whew.

I wasn’t sure if they could qualify from the event cups AND two from the AA? I least, I didn’t think so. It’s all very confusing.

Maria Paseka could give her a run for her money, especially if she attends more Apparatus World Cups than Jade and wins them. The level of competition at the World Cups this quad has been top notch and way more exciting than they have ever been before. It will be very interesting to see how everything shakes out in the end.

She definitely may...which is a travesty in my opinion. Jade’s form isn’t perfect but I just cannot get on board with Paseka’s preflight leg split!!

Yeah, I'm happy for her. It's nice to know someone who didn't qualify for elite when they were twelve still ended up being very successful.
